I recently had this problem. Many will say instantly its the clutch (which it might be.) First check the clutch pedal. The slack adjustment on the clutch pedal is plastic and will wear. Mine was worn and would not keep the cable properly set for clutch disengagement.

Texan Tony put a mod to fix the clutch pedal quadarent so that the cable is fix. You wont' have the adjustabilty which is a minor thing but you will be able to shift properly.

email me at [email protected] and I'll forward it to Tony to tell you how to fix.

It may be a clutch/throw out bearing problem but this is an easier fix to try first.

Is there any specific way to test other than these symptoms that would indicate that the slack adjustment part of the clutch pedal is having trouble? I'm just curious because in the first 150 or so miles on the '94 the new clutch has yet to require any adjustment (it doesn't click when pulling up). However it shifts very nicely, so maybe there isn't anything to worry about.

If it shifts good then no worries.

If the cable tension is found to be properly set, then your pressure plate and throwout bearing interface is worn and will require replacement. This is basically a "new clutch" and should include the friction disk, pressure plate and throwout bearing and resurfaced flywheel. Other services possible with the transaxle out of the car are new rear main seal, new shift shaft bushings, new transaxle seals and even new synchronizer blocking rings. My story posted in the Forum with pictures here and here.
