+1 on the shifter brace... its the linkage that connects to the tranny, but doesnt move, it stabilizes shifting, and you wont be able to engage the "bottom" gears, its part of the shift linkage

indeed, it is also not un-common for the stabilizer bolt to break off at the transmission. And since his motor/trans was recently out (I thought?) it might be worth checking to see if its loose at the tranny.
