my sho temperature guage says it is running very hot but the heat isn't even hot yet but a few minuits more and my heat will work so i know that my car is not running hot. i am guessing that it needs a thermostat what is it.

That would be the temperature sender for the dashboard gauge, not the thermostat.

Scott,
Correct me if I'm wrong. But would a stuck closed thermostat have the same symptoms?? Overheating and no heat in the car??

the thermostat being stuck closed would give you plenty of heat assuming there is enough coolant in the system.

just replace both. the thermostat is the 192 degree motorcraft one because they dont' sell the 180 degree for the MTX anymore. The sender is only like 6 bucks. Coolant is about 5 bucks a gallon so it looks like you will be spending a whole 30 bucks. not too bad.
