I recently had a guy tell me that the block in my 95 atx was basicly a 3.0 ford ranger block that had been board and stroked, is that right? He also said that the heads adn intake off of my car would bolt right on to the ranger block, is this true?

The dimensions on the 3.0 vulcan block are the same as the 3.0 aka MTX SHO block, but that's where the similarities end.

The 3.0 Yamaha engine was built from scratch. If you do a little searching, you'll find that ... as the story goes ...

Ford gave Yamaha a vulcan engine and said "put some good heads on it and make it worth about 250HP". Yamaha laughed, took some measurements and built a new engine from those measurements.

This reminds me though...

there are a few Vulcan fans that take SHO cranks, rods, etc.. and build high HP Vulcans.

I don't think that the sho crank drops right in to a Vulcan block, but very little work is needed to get a forged SHO crank into a vulcan block.

SHO Crank in a Vulcan:
Auto Trans: use AT 3.0L/3.2L SHO Crank and rods.
Man Trans: use only the 3.0L MT Crank (otherwise you will need a custom flywheel/flexplate, or welded/redrilled mounting holes in the crank).
Mix and match pullies/harmonic dampeners to fit. All rotating assemblies must be balanced due to the swapping.

Not my info, but I can't remember where I found it, just that I thought it would be useful to save. SHO and Vulcan pistons are the same diameter too, it might be possible to use SHO pistons in a Vulcan.

TBH, I don't get the point of trying to stuff SHO internals into a Vulcan, when a SHO block can be bolted up in place of a Vulcan instead, and have DOHC and the intake.

only the original prototype sho used a vulcan block

there is a thread about said engine (and the taurus it was put in) on this forum and screamandfly.com

The overall engine design changed ALOT after that prototype, new block, heavily revised heads, revised intake...
