I cleaned the intake and yes I broke off a bolt, but that has been fixed. I replaced the valve cover gaskets and plug wells. I drove it to work today and it ran like crap. I ran the codes and got 91 ego sensor-signal voltage always indicates lean or transaxle problem-shift solenoid 1 circuit failure. I would guess that it is the ego sensor. I am going to replace the spark plugs again now that I have replaced the plug wells. My question is do I even have that solenoid that could be bad? And, Is there anything else that could be causing this car to spit and sputter the way it does? I drove 80 miles, so I would think that all the cleaner would be gone!?

Thanks for all the help ahead of time!

It is a 1991 SHO plus.

I think that I have been telling everyone this over the last few days because I ran into that same problem, and this was the cure. If you had your intake off, check the computer ground strap at the back passenger side of the intake. Make sure that this is really snug and not loose. this could cause that problem. Just a suggestion. Worth a quick second and cheap to fix.

Use the Bosch ones. These are the same as the Motorcraft ones, but cheaper. Any of the parts stores should have them. Make sure that you specify SHO. You knew that wink

First, it would be very coincidental for the O2 sensor to fail and read lean just after you removed the intake. Normally the lone code 91 would indicate that the front bank O2 sensor had become non-functional, but combined with the poor performance, I would suspect instead a vacuum leak.

Check the vent line from the front valve cover to the throttle body and the line from the intake to the fuel pressure regulator. Also check all other vacuum hoses you had removed from the intake. If none are found, you will need to loosen the intake bracket bolts and verify that the manifold is securely seated on the heads and the intake bolts are torqued properly to 17 lb-ft.

As for the O2 sensor, use the Bosch 13942 from AutoZone for $33.99. The Borg-Warners have shown poor operating histories in several instances on the SHO.

I checked all the vaccum lines and all appear to be there and I could not hear nor feel any sort of leak. The only reason that I believe that it is the o2 sensor is b/c the car does have 157000 miles on it and I am not too sure that they have ever been changed. Also, where is a good place to get the motorcraft spark plugs? Thanks again.
Also, I made very sure that the intake was placed correctly, and tightened to 17lbs after my most recent bolt brakeage.

Thanks for the spark plug info!!! That is cheap!
Scott, I just checked online and the are wanting 38.99 for the bosch o2 sensors. Is that just online do you know or did inflation take over?!

You may want to call around at your local auto supplies for the Motorcraft plugs. Several of ours carru them cheaper than FPN.com. The price has either gone up or it is a regional difference.

If you truly have a vacuum leak, just use some carb cleaner and mist it around your vacuum lines while the engine is running any change in rpm's would indicate a leak. You can also do this around the intake manifold as well the key word is (mist it on.)

Verify that the cruise control cable is clipped onto the throttle shaft. The vacuum supply to the cruise module comes off of the plastic distribution manifold mounted to the firewall above the brake booster. This manifold gets its vacuum source from the rear plenum. I don't think that would cause a lean condition on the front bank.

The best O2 sensors for the 3.0L are the Bosch 13942 from AutoZone for $38.99. If yours are still the originals, you would definitely benefit from replacing them. Better engine response, better fuel mileage and lower emissions.

It is me Michael. Forgot my password and lost it all when I had to reinstall windowsXP. Anyways, I got a code 81 today. I am going to replace the o2 sensors and spark plugs fri or sat.
A code 81 in my book says the following four things could be wrong:

1. Thermactor Air Diverter(TAD or AM-2); circuit failure. What is this?

2. Electro-Drive fan: circuit failure. The fans came on so I don't think that this is the one.

3. Intake Air Control(IAC) valve: circuit failure.
is this the same as the IAB?

4. Boost solenoid - circuit faliure. What is this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!

yes I plug it in. What does it do? i am wondering if that my be the cause of my troubles. I am going to Autozone and pick my o2 sensors in about ten minutes. already replaced the plugs and still no change. I am going to pull off the IAC solenoid and see if the contacts and the o-ring is bad. Thanks again.
