during winter i was getting the check engine light after long (5+ hour) highway trips.. although the coolant temp was normal the engine was getting really hot. giving it a rest would alleviate the ce light issue for a while till it got driven a while longer.

now in the warmer weather the coolant temp is beginning to peak also. got upto almost the n of normal the other day. i'm guessing this is a lean condition.

changed fuel filter because its cheap, easy and probably needed to be done anyhow. but didnt seem to change anything (removing oil cap i even get steam rising from the crankcase after cruises) just did oil change also.

i get no codes KOER but KOEO i get

528 (M) System shows voltage at pin 10 (is A/C on ?) or pin 30 (PNP, CPP switch) - PNP
542 (O,M) Fuel pump open, bad ground or always on - - Power / Fuel Pump Circuits

climate control was off, but i do have a gremlin in the electrcal system that gives me the occasional battery light but that hasent happened in a while.

was thinking to try o2's as a hail mary, but figured i'd check here first.

I do not understand. The coolant temp was normal but the engine was really hot. How do you know? The engine will be nice and hot to the touch after a 5 hour trip.

Do your cooling fans come on? Have you ever replaced your thermostat? What does the coolant look like? How long since it was changed last? Are the fins on the radiator and condensor strait and free from serious debris?

the radio head unit would get realy hot to the touch, which is what tipped me off. its right in front of the engine bay. this was in the dead of winter too.

its not normal for the crankcase to have steam rise from it by just opening the oil filler cap after a 1/2 hour drive too ;)

and i think 528 can be scratched, looks like its my clutch pedal switch which i've bypassed.

just replaced coolant with fresh distilled water/coolant after my front 60k early this spring. and the rad is in good shape.. the engine seems really hot even when just 20 min drives are made and the temp guage doesent creep past r of normal.

p.s. just went out and checked fuel pressure and its within spec. took 3 primes to get to 40 psi but other than that a steady 32 psi or so throughout the rpm band.

What kind (brand) of t-stat are you using. Until I put a real Ford t-stat in I could never get good engine temps even in the winter.

dunno, whatever the previous owner put in. was never a problem (second year owning) till now.

i also had high NOx during my last months emissions test (double the allowable) which tipped me off to overly hot combustion temps also. should probably have mentioned that eh? first e-test a few years ago was high NOx also but passable.

what else should i mention that i may have missed? its a '94 MTX.. plug wells are wet but will remedy soon.

think thats all.

gotta love closure.
