I'm going to be purchasing a rod shifter for my '89 Red SHO, and I've been hearing about it isn't as easy as just removing the cable shift and putting the new one in. I heard that the exhaust gets in the way with the rod shift, so what would I need to get to fix that problem?

Sorry if it is a real bone head question, I just want to know what my options are because I don't have the time to do a lot of "stupid" work just to upgrade something simple.

Is there a flex pipe I have to buy or something?
I have a stock exhaust by the way and I intend to replace the y-pipe with an equal length.

you will need to get a resonater pipe from a MTX that came with a rod shifter. you will need to make sure you get both mounting brackets for the rod shifter as well. i'm not 100% sure on a first gen, but on a second gen all the dimples for drilling the holes for the bracket are already on the floor pan on ATX and SLO's. i imagine the first gen has them as well someone correct me if i'm wrong. remove all the cable shifter parts, drill and cut the holes and bolt the rod shifter on. the transmission is the same, there is just a bracket you will have to remove from the cable shifter assm. you will also have to get a upper console peice from a rod shifted car. i sent you a PM.

search for posts under my name within the last month. I did the swap at the end of august, and if i had to do it again, it wouldn't take me very long at all.
the dimples are there in the gen1s, although the front two dimples were hard to make out on mine. I just used the upper mounting bracket to mark where the holes would need to be drilled and drilled.
you'll need the bent resonator pipe.
cut the cable that goes through the firewall on the firewall side and pull through the interior.

it shouldn't take you more than 2hrs, unless you lose/don't label screws for the center consol. *note* you'll end up with a few extras, which is fine, just make sure you put the right screws back in the right place for everything else.
the most time consuming part is getting the hole in the floor cut nicely. i ended up putting fire carpet over top on the inside and using a cutting wheel to cut the hole.

forgot to mention... you don't need the consol/boot piece from the rod shifter car. i prefer the way the cable shifter piece looks, so i kept it.
