I have yet another question that is probably stupid but i'm gonna ask it anyway. How come my reverse gear has a mind of it's own. It's weird, sometimes I can get right into reverse and other times, i can't get in to it at all..(on those occasions i have to run through all the gears.) NO matter what the temp of the car is, this happens. Not just when it's cold but even after a long trip it's tough sometimes. I always go to first gear and i'm always at a complete stop before i go into reverse. Once in a while i'll get some harsh, mean, disgusting grinds. Any ideas?? thanks again.

Try this if you haven't done so already: Clutch in, shifter to 4th, shifter to reverse, clutch out. This is about the only sequence that reliably gets me into reverse.

I hate this as well.. I find shifting to any of the higher forward gears helps.. I always shift to third and then drop it diagonally back into reverse.

If I got from 1st ro Reverse I get the same thing as you.. either it grinds going in (really embarassing, people think you don't know what you're doing!!!) or it pops out with a bit of grind when you start letting the clutch out. Nasty!

I realize that Reverse isn't syncromeshed, but damn, neither is my 2000 Celica and that thing makes no noise whatsoever

Because there isn't a synchro on reverse gear, you have to either push in the clutch and wait a while for the gear sets to stop spinning, or you can shift in to 4th, 2nd or other synchro'd gear to do the same in a much shorter time. The routine is clutch in, shifter into 4th, shifter into reverse. The gear teeth are large and square on the end, so you can't force the shifter into reverse. The gear teeth in the Celica don't have to deal with the power and torque of a 220hp, 200 lb-ft, 7,300 rpm engine. If still unable to slip it in, pull on the shifter in the reverse gate with a firm hand and slowly and gently let out the clutch. As the gears start to rotate, the pressure on the shifter will engage the first available gear tooth. The key here is the slow clutch release.

Yah, but come on.. it's still 180hp and 140 torque at 8,000RPM, not like there's a substantial difference there except on the torque figures. The SHO just has a crappy tranny and that's that

If there was one thing I could change about that car it would definitely be the tranny... even my friend's Contour SVT doesn't do it, and that's 200hp and 170 torque on a fellow Ford. Nor does the Mustang's T5 with 260hp and 280 torque.

Glad to know I'm not the only one that experiences the above things. I've heard 5th and then reverse but I'll give that 4th to reverse a try.

Fifth and then reverse should automatically engage the reverse-lockout feature...so overzealous highway warriors don't go from 90 to reverse trying to hit 4th.
