I just bought a 96 gen III and love it. What's the deal with the speed limiter in reverse? Is there any way to disable it? Jim Rockford would be VERY upset with this feature.

I do believe that Jim Rockford had never driven a V8 SHO with the slushomatic AX4N tranny. Shift and slam the gas at the wrong time and you'd be going nowhere fast. Maybe the limiter is there for a reason, like so no one destroys the tranny? Just guessing at that one wink

Notice too that the speedo and the odo both work in reverse.

No, I am not trying to break the land speed record in reverse, (although it might be fun), nor do I want to cause any damage to the trans. Te J-turn or, as I refer to it as the, "Rockford reverse turn", can be safely accomplished without damage to atx if it is done properly. First you must reach a speed in reverse impossible with the speed limiter, then the wheel is turned just a little bit one way to unbalance the chassis, then hard back the other way and brakes locked, (only then do you shift from rev to dr. while the front wheels are not turning in either direction), then smoothly apply power in forward gear. We had a '86 Tauras Police model at the acadamy that was used to teach this tactic hundreds of times with damage only to tires. It is not really a big deal. I just hate for automakers in put in devises to protect me from myself. Just in my vehicle, Auto door locks, (if I want to lock the doors I will do it myself), DRL's, and the formentioned speed limiter preventing my escape from a possible carjacker. -Tacmedic

I am pretty sure you can disable that function of the door locks. I believe it will be in the owners manual.

Hey "Tacmedic" ;->
Methinks many on this forum are too young to remember "Rockfords". Their loss.
I'll have to see if there is a speed limiter in reverse on my 94 SHO ATX. If so, I hope you figure out the way to disable it. Then, you can teach me. It'll be fun practicing.

Hey John, Surely you are proficient (sp?) in the "Rockford Turn" I do believe you used to have a 1970.5 Camaro. Very similar to the famous gold Firebird. I think old Jim would look down on our front wheel drive hot rods.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I installed a Rhino push bumer on my SHO so I could perform the PIT maneuver on those bastards hogging the high speed lane wink

First, I did have a 1970.5 Camaro RS, but I was only able to keep it "between the lines" for about 3 weeks before that tree jumped out in the middle of the road. I did not own it long enough to try, much less practice, the Rockford.

Second, Jim (Garner) is indeed "old" now and not likely to be doing his own stunts in his new primetime drama show (don't know the name). Boy, wouldn't it be cool to see a Supreme Court Justice doing a Rockford, though?

O.K., so the carjacking thing was a little "out there", but who knows? But, a pit on left lane bandits, I like that one :D I guess I might get in trouble if I hung my G36K out the drivers window and shot the tires out. I guess I will have to just flash the high beams :cool: -Tacmedic

Just make sure that im not in front of you when you do it! :) J-turns are fun, I have attempted them in my car with the stock tires, and boy is it fun!!!!

I tried it in the snow, and just kept spining in circles 3 or 4 times lol
