- I've seen this topic mentioned here a few times. My factory sub cone was completely separated from the cage. Sun-baked to a crisp!

I'm offering up a solution for anyone interested. Not yet 100% complete, but enough to help someone in need.

. . . Are you using a stock sub amp still?

- Yup. But I'll probably boost the wire size a bit since it's so easy. Factory JBL system isn't all that bad by my standard.

I'm not building the audiophile car, just fixing the broke part. Rest of system is stock except for head unit which is a new Pioneer the previous owner had installed by a shop.

Not saying I won't bump the system, but my plans are for suspension and underside rust (almost done), drivetrain (next), Interior (not much needed on this car), exterior (minor body work and new paint, then the audio.

looks clean, good work, ED isn't my first choice but for the purpose it's as good as any...

- Just an update on this install. I decided to mount the box without adding any filler to bring it down from .43cf to the recommended .31cf. I figured the extra volume would open up some lower frequencies at the expense of crispness, but I just wanted to see what I had as a baseline.

I couldn't be happier! That little ED speaker may seem odd marketed as a "sub", but it def earns the title.

Granted, the Pioneer HU has a decent equalizer function and probably produces a better outcome than the oem unit.

Remember - this is not the audiophiles car, but I definitely like quality, full-spectrum sound, and I'm well satisfied.

I believe that for minimal $$ and effort, this is an excellent fix or upgrade for the factory sub.

Thats a pretty cool setup. On 2 of my previous SHOs I started small projects like this & ended up hooking multiple amps & subs... :nut:

****, my old system cost twice as much as I paid for my current SHO....now I've just got mids, highs and a head unit, looking for an amp to power my JL 6w0 stuffed in the factory enclosure that i'm gonna modify and mount in the right rear of the trunk for a little better sound distribution.

The '92 SHO I bought from a dealers lot had all of the JBL system gear in the trunk stolen, except the JBLs in the rear window tray. Rather than try and find replacememnts (I'm not going for concours restoration) I had my local auto stereo shop take the system out of my '93 GL and put it in my SHO.

Pioneer Tape Deck (big investment in pre-recorded tapes, plus my own "greatest hits" tapes from my large collection of vinyl), but the deck also controls a Pioneer six CD changer. Two Alpine amps. One amp is a 40w X 4, to power the JBLs - which sound great even with the extra power - and the other amp is a 450 w mono amp powering a ported box with a good 10" sub. The box sits in the truck, and is held in place by velcro strips. The hole where the original sub was enhances the new subs performance by letting bass out of the trunk.

Sounds great! To finish, I'm going to line parts of the trunk (around the tail lights, the floor including the spare tire well, and part of the sides with Dynamat sound deadener).

For my daily driver GL, I had an Alpine CD player installed, and added an old Kicker mono amp for the existing sub box in the trunk.
