Replacement Clutches

What replacement clutches are good. I know LUK has one available and that they manufacture alot of OEM clutches. I found one on ebay for $220. Advance auto parts has a perfection for $273 and autozone has there duralast for $273. Does anyone have experience with these clutches? I was considering getting a stage 1 but i dont have the money at this point lol being a poor collage student stinks.

One of the outlets has clutches that are lifetime guaranteed (Don't know which one) if that interests you.
I bought mine at RockAuto and it was a "RhinoPak" which sounds silly, but it has performed well and I have no complaints. Everything in the kit is Valeo. I got a Ceramic Throw out Bearing seperately, and it has been good so far as well.
Someone on this forum bought a clutch with no throw out bearing.... so watch out for that.
Look for a clutch kit that has the "repair Quill" which is a sleeve that slips over the tranny snout and the TOB rides on it.... most have it.

I have used 2 of Valeos clutch kits for my SHO's and had great results for a stock replacement clutch.

..also I have seen the Duralast clutches from AZ with there lifetime warrenty that would slip at high rpm 5k+ on a stock SHO. Get a good clutch inless you like doing clutch jobs on these cars. just my 2c

If you're on a budget, go with a tried and true stock replacement. I'd grab the Sachs kit from Rockauto.

Doing an R&R on a SHO clutch is a great deal of work (or you need to pay others for signficant labor). Either way, the two weak points on the clutches are the drive straps, and (for other than highway cruisers) the diaphram finger wear issue. SHOnut has a clutch kit that addresses both problems, but does not attempt to change the pivot points or clamping force so no abritrary release problems.

Research carefully before you buy, my $0.02

IMO the very best way to spend your money is that Luk kit on ebay. All the guys here talk about the Valeo,Sachs, RhinoPac and etc that are 270-280 and contain Valeo components. Yeah those are all great clutch kits, however the Luk kit is also all Valeo components (at least mine was) and costs 50 less. I got mine on ebay for the same price so i wouldnt be surprised if it was the same seller. I ordered it and it was here in NY in about 3 days. Its been working out very well for me so far. I would say any upgraded clutch worth a crap goes for at least $400, if youve got the coin the clutch would definitely be something worth upgrading. If you are looking to go the most cost effective way the Luk is a great choice. Hope that helps

If you buy a "nice" clutch once, you can reuse your PP and just buy a new disc. I think I paid $40 to put a new clutch in last time I did it. Just the Valeo disc is cheap.. the PP is the expensive part.

Whatever TOB comes in it should be discarded and a ceramic TOB from shonutperformance substituted if you want maximum life...the TOB is the first part to fail. The exception is if you want a performance PP, in which case buy a kit from Clutchmasters, etc.

I don't think the Shonut TOB helps the issue. I do believe it's a better quality part but it still causes similar wear to stock TOB's (I have proof). So in my opinion it's not worth the extra cash and downtime (if not planned).

The advance perfection has valeo stamped all over it. I have a beck Arnley that i got clearance from rock auto for $119 shipped!

I used the Duralast kit. You can save $50 and get the kit without the TOB if you are going to use shonut's ceramic TOB. All of these standard kits seem to be about the same regardless of brand. Valeo rebuilt PP and a disk that usually has a Ford OEM PN stamped on it. The performance kits have HD clutch disk material, and PP's that have been reinforced to allegedly prevent straps from breaking. But on stock SHO's the TOB's are usually what dies first in the clutch.

Sorry, but I would strongly, strongly discourage anyone from buying one. Their QA is severely lacking.

I like the clutchmasters stage 1. The straps and rivets are upgraded. The straps are thicker and wider. The rivets are larger. All pressure plates are valeo. Some like clutchmaster are modified and rebalanced.

Stock in the front CM Stage 1 in the back.

But Racer X, there is no such thing as a Duralast manufactured clutch. Duralast is a marketing brand, not a manufacturer. The kit has a Valeo PP and disk, or Ford OEM disk, in a Duralast box. That is the same thing you get if you buy Beck Arnley, Luk, etc. It's too bad you had a problem with your clutch kit, but there is no basis to blame the Duralast brand. Blame Valeo.

It may have a Valeo branded PP cover, but at this point every PP cover, plate, and release spring has been re-manufacutured by someone. I highly doubt that's new Valeo hardware, but rather a reclaimed Valeo PP cover, and a new plate, spring, and straps.

To clarify my complaint, whoever remanufactures the Duralast clutch for the V6 SHO application has some serious QA issues.
