One thing I just though of... Make a mark on the nut and the frame, and see if it is the Nut that is loosening or not. make a mark on the stud and the nut as well.

Whoa, never heard this one before. I better check mine next time I'm under the SHO.

Let us know how it goes.

BTW, did you install a new mount when you replaced the clutch? If so, did you intall the mount with the subframe on or off the car?
What is the difference if you install the mount with or without the subframe on or off Thanks thumb

Okay, the SAGA continues...

With a twist...

I drove to work this morning... with clunking when slowing and braking. Rear motormount, right?

I happened to take a sack lunch today, so I didnt come home or go out for lunch. So the car remained parked for 9 hours.

I drive home this evening... NO NOISES.

WTF?

If I hadnt just replaced every stinking suspension part on this car, while replacing the clutch, I think I would consider just throwing random new parts at it... to see id the noise goes away. But the SHO-funds are currently depleated.

So lets recap:

1. Cluncking sounds heard when slowing, rolling over speed bumps, or downshifting.
2. car passes the 'motormount test' No unusual movement
3. clunking felt through the floor and shifter. Shifter also moves forward and back much more during clunking.

If the shifter is moving, then the engine almost has to be moving right along with it. I must admit I find it very unusual. Since it moves going over bumps as well as with engine torque that really points to the subframe mounts. Are you certain they are torqued to spec and not moving?

I don't know if you replaced them during your clutch job or not. But that is exactly what my ATX did when the subframe bushings were totally shot. I replaced them with Alum and haven't had a problem since.

I already had AL SFBs

Anyways... I feel like a fool... rant

I think the first (or second) retorquing of the motor mount did secure the mount successfully. I thought that I had been hearing two different 'clunks' but I was not certain, until now.

The motor mount is indeed securing the motor properly. And the SFBs are secured properly.

It seems that I had overtorqued the two nuts that hold the shifter's 'black box' to the sliding assembly. I loosened them a bit, squirted some lub on the 'tracks' and the noise went away completely.

It looks like since the shifter was limited in it's ability to slide properly, the 'clunk' I was getting was from the shifter rod to gear selector rod in the trans. The next time you get under your car, grab the shift rod and pull it front to back and back again. 'clunk, clunk' headbang

It is MUCH worse when the motor is moving around a bit (as it always does) and the shifter assembly is tied too tight to the unibody.

I am such a fool.
