My 89 has the factory amp so does this mean the stock deck has RCA outputs??? I havnt took the dash apart to look yet, i was going to put an inline converter in and was waiting to get that before i did anything. And if the stock deck has RCA outputs and the factory amp is using them, can i just rewire the speakers to the deck and use the outputs to run my amp???

whats a proprietary connection....doe they just use wires instead???? and if they do which wires are they coming off the deck, are they labeled are anything? Im thinking i could just splice into them. By the way this would only be a temporary set-up, im getting my other deck back in a couple weeks...Thanks!!

A proprietary connection is a connection unique to the specific item. You might want to check the wiring diagrams at the top of this forum... I'd wait for yourt new deck, it will make things a ton easier, and the stock amps suck.

If you're just replacing the factory amp with an aftermarket one, all of the work you need to do can be done from the trunk, and without too much effort--just hook the stock head unit back up normally.

  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Start with a Ford Premium Sound Amplifier Bypass Harness, which you should be able to get at any Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. for less than $15.
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Cut this harness in half.
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">One half of this harness plugs into the low-level outputs from the head unit. Use this to connect to 4 RCA plugs. The wires on the harness should be labeled. (I'll admit my using a terminal strip was a bit crude, but it's been working fine for a couple of years now.)
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Wire the loose ends of the other half into the speaker level outputs on the amp. Connect this plug to its mate that went into the old amp.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">
By connecting your amp this way, you haven't disturbed any of the factory wiring; if you screw up, change your mind, or want to sell the car with the original stuff, your only real cost is the bypass harness.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.

If you reconnect the factory deck, the small grey cable in the trunk is already supplying a low-level signal. All the bypass harness is doing is saving the connector on that cable.

After re-reading your posts, I think I may understand better what you're trying to do. You're trying to reinstall the factory head unit, and still use your amp to power the subs. The problem with that is that the factory head unit only has low level outputs--it cannot drive your speakers without an external amp. If you still have the factory amp and the car's wiring is intact, I'd recommend basically reconnecting the factory setup and doing without the subs until you get the other head unit back. Otherwise, you'll have to connect the factory amp, then splice into the car's wiring in the trunk to be able to feed a crossover to split the signal to the 4 speakers & subs.

I just got done hoking everything up duff. So as of right now i have the factory deck w/ the factory amp running the highs, i have a line out converter hooked to the back speakers, running to a 400watt amp running to MTX 10's. The problem is that the subs pick up every sound. it sound like s*ht. Is there some type of blocker i can buy to filter out the highs going to the subs??? Thanks for the help!!

Yes--a low pass filter. Not hard to find, but you'll have to figure out the cutoff frequency and slope. Probably between 100 & 200Hz; 12dB/octave is pretty typical.

I couldnt find a low pass filter anywhere. Everyone says that they dont carry them seperate anymore because almost all the amps come w/ them. I think im just going to deal w/ it until i get my deck. I also think im going to try to hook the coverter up to the deck to see if that helps any. When i pulled my deck, theres only like 5 or so wires on the harness. Do they hook into a harness that the speakers are on??? Thanks!!

You armp should have a lowpass filter of some kind other wise you got a cheap amp. Also crossovers will have lowpass filters as well. I installed system before but I used high imputs as oppsed to RCAs. It sounded like crap and picked up the alternator noise. It was the cheap way of doing but the guy wanted it like that. Wait till you get the head unit or turn on the filter. I was picking up altenator noise in my system because I had 2 amps and the cap fixed that.

I hooked my aftermarket amp up to my stock sub wiring. Seeing as it was never supposed to come with a sub(it is a 91) I didn't understand why it even had that wiring... In the trunk on the drivers side right under the 6x8 speaker there is a gray plug one terminal inside is positive one is negative... Then hook that up to your SPEAKER LINE INPUT on your amp and that should run fine... if you need more help ill email you some pics I can't figure out how to put pics on this headbang Pm me for more info
