I just picked up my new 1st gen (1990) today and noticed a few small issues maybe you guys can help me out.

1. I know it has the sho-shop catless y-pipe and it's leaking BADLY. I'm going to have this fixed in the morning but how badly will a leaking Y-pipe affect power? I remember my first SHO being MUCH stronger than this one. It won't even chirp the tires punching it at 4Krpms in first.

2. check engine light is on...most likely because of the leaking Y-pipe. Does anyone know if there is a way to precvent the CEL with the catless y-pipe? I sell "MIL eliminators" for heated 02 sensors...does the SHO need these also?

3. Does the MIL cause the car to run in limp mode?

4. WTH causes the shifter to be so vague?? I have a better chance of becoming the next man on the moon than finding the right gear in a hurry. My last SHO had a rod shifter. Not sure what this one has.

5. anyone know the stock wheel weight on the basketweave wheels? I like these wheels a lot (15" are very un-assuming :thumb: )

I'm going to spend the day cleaning the car up and getting some pics for you guys. As of now I know it has the following:

SHO SHOP catless Ypipe
190lph Walboro fuel pump
solid motor mounts
custom short shifter (cut down shaft)
aftermarket mufflers on stock catback
Sho Shop CAI
some aftermarket clutch (not sure)
new plugs and taylor wires.
60K servie done appx 20K ago.

I would expect the car to be MUCH faster than it is. Maybe I'm exaggerating my glory days!

spoke with Korey (previous owner). CEL is caused from Exhaust leak...running in limp mode. Also torque and power is way down due to the exhaust flow disruption. Tomorrow I'll fix the y-pipe, clear the code and run it again....see if she does any better!

You have a cable shifter, its alot different than a rod shifter. Some like it, some dont.

Best thing to do before you clear the codes is run them. I never take someones word for it on why there is a ce light.

The car is not so sensitive that a small exhaust leak would make the car run totally crappy. When you say BADLY, it must be like fist sized.

on the backside of the engine where the y-pipe meets up to the manifold it's only half on....I think it's a pretty bad leak. It pops and snarls at idle...very raspy. Hopefully I can get it fixed today. I'm not sure if my exhaust shop will be open though.

I'll fix the leak and clear the code....if the CEL was because of the leak it won't come back on. If it DOES come back on then there's another problem and I'll check the code then.

The shifter is WAY vague. You need GPS to find 5th gear and 1st is real hard to get into. I'll see if I can locate a rod shifter for sale and swap that on. If that doesn't fix it I'll just have to learn to cope.

Well basically the interior exhaust is SHOT. the previous owner didn't buy a catless y-pipe. He cut the stock ones off and welded in some flex pipe....poorly. also the rest of the system is rusted through and full of holes. The mufflers are hanging on in a crazy orientation.

Looks like I need a new y-pipe. anyone have a catless y-pipe for sale?

When my exhaust pretty much feel off after the y-pipe. (That donut ring rusted into pieces and 1 bolt was able to work itself free. I lost TONS of torque. I had to limp it home .2 mile (thank god if feel off so close to home) and I was revving it to like 4 grand in first trying to get it to move under its own power. (it was loud as sh*t though)

Anyway, it never threw a CE light for me...checked the codes, nothing except the 541 fuel pump thing...

hey matty thats a equal length sho shop stainless offroad y pipe on the car i had to use that flex tube kause nothing was mating up correctly if you pull that off the test pipe is directly inside of it the flex pipe is just bridging the gap. I was having problems with hard shifts at one point and the y pipe would come apart going down the road so that was my temporary fix until i could get cats welded in. I beleive if you mate everything correctly to the manifolds everything should match up just fine. Oh and the mufflers....yeah definatly not a proud day for my welding skills

I wasn't able to get all the way under the car but what the guy was telling me was that the cat had been cut off and a flex section was welded in in it's place...he said that the flex section was were 80% of the leaks were coming from. He then said the middle section of the catback was rusted through in a few places. He also said everything was held together with clamps that were leaking badly.

The guy just wanted to sell me a whole new exhaust I assumed. He says NOTHING is salvageable and they wont even touch the car without me buying a new STOCK y-pipe with cats. I told him no chance in ****.

I then called Doug at FPS and he quoted me $708 for a catless Y and full catback. I'mm most likely have to go that route....man I was hoping the exhaust fix woudn't be more than $50-75 bucks! Everything else I can deal with!

Are there other suppliers for the Y-pipe other than SHO shop and FPS? IIRC when I was last sho-shopping the SHOShop pipe was the only one I knew of.

BittersweetSHO has em....cheap, too.

I've run my car with the exhaust unhooked just aft of the y-pipe, and aside from scaring small children, it ran like a gorilla with a banana hanging from it's ****....

Can a leaky exhaust really throw a MIL light? That sounds kind of shady.....which sensor would do it? MAP? now i'm curious....

I bought my wife's with a hole in the cat big enough for me to be able to stick my finger in it....no MIL until the DPFE went to ****. I've run mine for a couple of hours coming straight out the y-pipe when my exhaust fell apart whilst delivering pizzas....again, no problem.

who is bittersweetSHO? Can someone put me in contact with him/her/it?

The CEL only comes on when I run the rpms up enough to make the exhaust scream. Shut the car off and the CEL goes away. Around town driving it won't come up but if I try to accelerate hard to get on the interstate it'll come on and stay on until I shut the car off.

The CEL comes from the leak PRIOR to the O2 sensors. It sucks so much outside air in i throws off the readings. I've had this happen on other models. Bad exhaust leaks before the O2's isn't a good thing
