Question for MTX experts on hard shifting

Hmm on my old 91 sho i had the same problem and i switched to lucas oil synthetic 75w90, i know it sounds alittle to0 thick but it worked wonders in the old car and shifted like i dream up until i sold her for my new 93 atx.

I probally put around 20,000+ miles on the tranny with it in there until i sold it and it never showed in probelms so thats my 2 cents on the deal but i've also heard great things about syncromesh it's up to you depends on how much you want to spend i think the last time i bought the stuff it was like 10 bucks a 1qt

i payed 10 bucks a quart for teh amsoil i just dumped and 11 per quart for the MTL i have in it now, ill gladly pay for the syncro mesh if its less notchy. 75 90 dont sound to thick thats what the mtl is.

I put another 50 mile son it and like i said above its bette rthen the amsoil, i wonder if any one knows of anything thicker or should i say better for notchyness then the MTL?

I use Royal Purple Max ATF. Thinner. Takes away both notchy and hard to get in gear issues on my car. There is Royal Purple Synchromax that is thicker and is better than the gm stuff.

Its always difficult to balance the needs of shifting (thinner is better to a point) and the temperature resistance needed for a Quaife differential (thicker is better). I've been using Redline D4 but when cold shifting is notchy. The Royal Purple Synchromax sounds like an option.

Shifting is still way to hard to grab gers quicky at high RPM, would a stock shifter be easier then my jose short throw?

I would say that Jose's shifter does transmit more of the notchy feel by nature, but if you cant grab gears quickly with that shifter and the thicker fluid, there is most likely a problem. Maybe you are experiencing some clutch slippage at high rpms in 1st, making the synchro slow to engage? At what RPM does it become tough to shift?

there is no way the stage 3 clutch is slipping, it grabs like you couldnt believe, I shifted some other SHOs to compare and mines not as bad as some but i felt one that was very nice and it had stock shifter thast why i wondered, i might try thicker fluid before friday just to see if it makes it even better.

the syncromesh i think is what i will try next. maybe tommrow if i can get time. i wish i knew if the lucas was thicker or even that RP syncro stuff. seems i need very thick to get rid of the notchiness.

the diffs metal braces was cut by me and it was just little pieces of angle steel, I had a tig welder weld them to keep the pins from being able to turn and snap the roll pins, the weight added is very minimal, Im sure the bearings will be fine for many years to come :)

I'm sure they will too, as I put over 40k miles on two different transmissions with reinforced differentials the same way and no bearing failures. The added weight isn't much of a concern to me as I had a race shop check out the balance of a stock differential and was told it needed some work if I wanted it to be balanced out. The differential has the transmission casing and bearings to keep it in check, plus the rest of the gears, shafts, and bearings as they are all connected by gear teeth. :thumb:


How old is your quadrant? I had the same problem and it was a worn quadrant that didn't allow proper cable tension to release the clutch. This problem will only increase with the extra tension caused by the dual diaphram pressure plate that comes with the CM Stg3 kit.
