Pulled the codes on my 92 last night (thanks Mikey) and one was 542 fuel pump always on or bad ground, and 116 ECT out of range. I'm guessing this is why it's running so rich? It left 2 nice piles of black soot just while reading the codes. I did the balance test and it turned out ok. I'm worried about the cats though because it's been driven in this condition to Az and back before I got it. So do I need to just replace the ETC? And on the fuel pump do I need to drop the tank and check the ground?

Thanks

the 542 code is stored any time the car stalls (for any reason). did you have the car at normal operating temp before checking the codes? i was getting a 116...then i realized the car was ice cold & needed to be warmed up DOH!~

EH.....cold, okay duh I missed that thanks, and I stalled it pulling it in my garage. The only other code was the map sensor which I already knew was the wrong one. Any ideas on why all the soot? This motor only has like 15k on it since being rebuilt.

Thanks

No, I would bet your ECT is bad if it is running rich and no other codes are stored/popping up.

Okay that makes sense, could I get the part# for the sensor please? Also where is it on the engine? Thanks for your help.

If it hasn't been driven much recently, it needs to be taken out and have the "carbon blown out of it". I may just be an accumulation of soot, quite normal in seldom used cars.

Rx: Take it for a joy ride!
