I'm going to head up to Laguna Seca, next month, to watch some races, and I thought it would be a good time to do some periodic maintenance.

Besides the usual oil change and checking other fluids, is dumping a can of injector cleaner in the tank worth it ? I have probably 160k on the car, and I have never cleaned the injectors.

Injector cleaner can't hurt.

I'd also recommend cleaning the MAF and resetting the computer. Obviously things like making sure your tire pressures are good and as is often over-looked make sure your spare is full!

I know if I really drive it, like going up into the mountains , at a good clip, it will throw a "rear bank lean" code and the engine light will come on. I suspect the rear O2 sensor for that, since it has a melted connector. ( See other thread ) . I think that's the only code that pops up.

Then it would be a very good idea to replace that 02 sensor - that way the pcm will control the mixture to the proper ratio and will not be making it run rich, trying to overcome what it sees as lean from the bad sensor.

Rubydist,

I can't change it, at this time, because the plug is melted together. In another thread, I mentioned finally finding a plug end at the salvage yard, this week. As soon as I get some heat reflective tubing or tape, so this doesn't happen again, I'm going to cut the old plug out.

Yes, on the injector cleaner. But as far as I am concerned, Chevron's Techron or BG are the only two worth spending your money on. Put it in just before you leave on the trip; an excellent time to get an effective cleaning. Also a fresh air filter if there is any age on the old one.

Critical pre-trip check? Check the tires for tread condition and pressure.

If you're religious say some prayers, if you're superstitious do whatever brings you luck because with cars this old a lot of things can break down/stop working without advance warning. Having said that I take my SHO on long trips all the time and except on a couple of occasion I haven't been left by the side of the road with the hood up and the family in the car.
