Powerwash intake?

I have been thinking once I get my new intake hoses I might powerwash the crap out of my intake. Has anyone ever tried this? Does anyone think there will be any big problems from doing this?

If it is off the engine and out of the car - no problems. You may, however, find that some of the finish can be removed to expose the aliuminum.

If it is on the engine in the car - let the sprayer beware.

No real need for a powerwasher anyhow.

just spray it down with some lightly diluted simple green, let it soak for a while, scrub hard to reach and really nasty portions if needed, and rinse with a garden hose.

Scott, I would be doing this with the intake off of the car. My grandparents have a powerwasher at their cabin and tons of tools so I might as well refresh my intake there. BTW I was referring to powerwashing the inside of the intake. Were you referring to the exterior of the intake Scott?

Kenny, I bet my grandfather has some lying around. I should try and see which method is more effective!

oh, your talking about the inside? Pressure washer wont do much there. simple green might work to a degree, but you need something MUCH stronger, and more toxic :eek: .

Oil and water dont mix. The majority of the gunk inside the intake is oil deposites. You need something that will cut the oil, as in nasty chemicals.

I use carb cleaner, others use "gum-out" I beleive.

try "gasket remover", it will make all the gunk in there fizz up and can basically just rinsed out w/ intake cleaner. I learned this cool trick during my 60K now I always use it when cleaning intakes. Works like a charm for me :thumb:

Carb cleaner 80 something cents at Walmart.

So much more you could do with the intake off, like.

Gasket match/port the runners and primaries on the plenums, also gasket match the heads, remove the inner lip on the intake hoses, all with a 18 dollar dremel from Pep-boys.

Also painting the intake and valve covers would be nice.

Hah, this is assuming everything goes nicely for me :) I might give those mods a shot, I have a dremmel lying around that I don't use too often. Oh and the Supertech carb cleaner gets a big thumbs up from me!

Yes, I found that permatex gasket remover is *excellent* for removing baked on carbon deposits also. However, for some reason it was still more efficient to just nuke the innards with lots and lots of Berryman's B12. Cheap carb cleaners don't work as well. It's kind of like removing nasty decal adhesive. Sure you can use acetone, or even carb or brake cleaner. But none of them will work as well as the product "Goof Off" or 3M adhesive remover and the carb and brake cleaners will hose the finish too. It doesn't matter that Goof Off shares many of the same major ingredients as carb cleaner. The formula is just designed with the right volatility and other properties to perform its task well. Most find that Berryman's works the best for cleaning SHO intake insides. I think the problem I had with gasket remover is that you need to be able to physically scrape it away which just isn't practical with the SHO intake. And bottle brushing it just didn't work as well as Berrymans. On something totally exposed, however, that gasket remover removes carbon really well. I decarboned my trucks piston tops with that ****. :thumbs_u:

if you want to be brave you can stick it in a bead blaster which is a sand blaster that uses lil peices of glass not sand. sand will tear up aluminum that would not be a good thing. what i did was i took off my intake bead blaster the whole thing on the outside and then stuck the gun in the runner ports as far as i could and stuck it in all the places i could. now it was alot easyer because i had the thing all apart in 5 parts so i could get to everthing. DON'T do the bead blasting with it all together because i don't think that would be to good for the secondaries. i cleaned them with brake clearer or carb cleaner. and if you do this make very sure you get a seal set and make TOTALLY SURE that there is no beads left in the intake this would be a very very bad thing if this got in your motor. i did it this way and worked out very good for me. hope this helps you. :D
