Ok I have a good idea as to the answer to my question already, Id just like to hear what other people think..

I have a bad vibration when on the brakes, I've never really checked it over technically but im going to go with warped rotor as the root of this vibration.

Now could that be causing my lugnuts to come loose?

I had a noise starting when I'm on the brakes and sometimes off the gas, but going away when on the gas, I checked a few things on the spindle, then popped off my lugnut covers and sure enough 2 were loose enough to spin by hand, one was loose enough that the lug wrench turned it a good amount. As I tightened them all up I snapped off a wheel stud... DOH, but I'll ride on 4.

So do you think the vibration of the brake rotor could work the lugnuts loose? I gotta save up some coin and buy some Cobra calipers soon I guess and run new 11.6 rotors. I'll find out if that cures the vibration at that time, hopefully its not something else. Any opinions on that?

I would highly doubt that the warped rotors would cause the lug nuts to come loose. Their are thousands of Tauri running around with warped rotors and the tires arn't all falling off. I would imagine they just weren't tighted all the way or properly the last time.

welp I've only removed my wheels and tires on my taurus' maybe 20-50 times... I think I know how to tighten them up

plus I use a brand new 1/2 inch MAC impact gun on them.....

so I really don't think thats what did it, I never had this problem before.

something is making those lugs come loose...

Gunning down your lugnuts will warp your rotors. Spin them on GENTLY with the gun to save time, torque them to spec with the wheel off the ground and somebody stepping on the brake. Your studs may be stretched from gunning them down, causing the lug nuts to be loose on the threads and backing off.

I gunned my lug nuts down on my wheel studs with a spacer in there to draw them through before too..........

that could have stretched them....

I'm thinking more along the lines that the vibration is tweaking the lug nuts and making them come loose... there really wasn't any metal powder in there, a sign of this happening... but in my mind this seems like the most logical choice...

however I have done thousands of cars with airguns to put the tires back on... and that is how most tire shops do it as well... I've also never had problems warping rotors because I tightened them too tight....

oh well I guess I'll just replace everything from the studs, rotor, and lugnuts when I do the cobra upgrade.

Most shops will used a Torque Bar on the impact gun. And uneven/too high torque CAN warp a rotor.

Good Job stretching your wheels studs. That's what happened to you lugs. The brake have NOTHING to do with it.

Next time try using a Torque Stick as listed above. A cheap Click Type Torque Wrench would work good on getting them around 100Lbs Ft. Plus while you're at it, change out those rotors to good quality FORD Rotors. (As per Paul Nimz he he he...)

Actually that's about the _only_ way to really distort a rotor. Rotor "warping" due to brake use has nothing to do with geometric trueness.

Impact wrench for tightening fasteners = bad news.

The last place that tried put my lug nuts on with an impact are lucky they still have their heads. They think I'm one crazy biotch and probably hate to see me coming because I make them use a click type torque wrench to tighten them properly. But hey, I pay good money for the tires and it's my car so they're going to do it my way. I don't even trust torque sticks. Or rather, I don't trust them using torque sticks because most of them don't care what they're torqued to, only that the tires are on.

The proper torque range is 80-100 ft. lb. IIRC. I generally go right down the middle at 90.

I replaced all 20 wheel studs and only this one spindle has a problem.

i used the same method and setup to put them all on....

I use an airgun a lot, when you R&R trannies all day you take off and put on a lot of bolts... I can even know roughly what my gun will do on a torque rating by just how much I modulate it tightening down the fastener...

I know everything you guys are telling me is the truth and proper way to do it. But listen for one second, i've been done this a lot and its just this one particular wheel having issues, which leads me to believe something else is going on.... I just don't think torquing everything down to the proper amount is going to fix this issue.... I was wondering if anyone else has had this specific problem with a taurus before and knew if there was a defect or worn part causing this.
