For the life of me, I'm stumped. I have never had one of these give me such a hard time going onto the half shaft that connects the cv axle to the tranny, should I try talking the half shaft off then attach the cv axle to it outside the car and then connect as an assembly?

They can be tough but once its lined up give it a quick push and it should go in.
thanks, it ended up being the retaining clip on the half shaft had expanded slightly from 3 years of sitting on a shelf....lol I ended up removing the half shaft, set it upright, got the axle on, then installed it all as an assembly:woo-hoo:
