So I've begun. I started to scrub and disassemble my car last night to get it ready to take to a paint shop. I thought I'd at least get all the tree sap, dead bugs, dirt and stains...etc. off of the paint so that the estimator could see everything that needed to be done.

During this "cleaning process" however, somehow a bucket of clean water, some sanding blocks and a roll of 400 grit sand paper ended up in my hand.

I now have a roof and deck lid that are ready for sealing and surfacing.

My question is:

Is this the correct order:

Sealer
Surfacer
Block sand
Sealer
Base coat, base coat, base coat
Clear Clear Clear.
Cut
Buff

Comments on the second sealer coat?

I just put the first sealer in there so that I could take a week or two between sanding and surfacing without oxidizing any spots I may have burned though to metal. I figured anyone that does body work in a shop would say to delete the first sealer, but when since I'm doing it at home...gotta account for those "uninspired" nights.

I'll just rattle can the spots in question and block it away when it's time for the surfacer. Once surfaced with 2k Surfacer, I'll be sealing with gray 2k sealer.

The thread this was in was part of the open forums which aren't searched, so I'm copying to here.

Here's some pics of the hood sanding

And where I am now.

As you can see in the following picture, Bill know's how to take out a fairly good sized ding. He hammered on it for about an hour, spread a bit of bondo, sanded. All I did was spray an extra coat of surfacer on that quater panel...all that was left was a TINY high spot on the character line

Great progress, and thanks for posting the photos. It's always great to see what a project like this looks like, in different stages.

They're pushing and 2 of them are stacked two deep...so six fans pushing. I'll have the garage door open 20 inches and I'll have 3 fans exhausting air out when it comes time to shoot topcoats. So, there will be a total of nine 0.8 Amp fans cycling air. Hardly enough to call it a "draft" booth, but it cleared the room pretty well when I shot the primers and I didn't have any fans pulling. The intake fans all have furnace filters and these types of fans don't like to make pressure so I think 3 exhaust fans and 6 intake fans should almost balance the rooms while hopefully, maintaining a slight positive pressure.

As I go along, I'm improving my little paint booth. I still need to "dexter" the ceiling and duct tape the cement to the walls so I can spray the floor with water and squeegee it off without getting my garage walls wet. I'm not too sure about that server box door, either.

paint booths should always be positive pressure so that your not sucking crap into the booth. The only air you want in the booth is air that has been drawn through the intake filters

Wow, nice job! That's the way to paint a car unlike how I did my 89, lol. If I had the room and equipment, I might have attempted it myself. Looks like some nice rigging here for a booth.

Thanks guys, but Bill keeps telling me that silver metallic is a very difficult color to spray, so don't get my hopes up...lol.

Did this yesterday morning but phone died and I had to run out. Everything but the front bumper cover is ready for scuff/seal/color/clear.

the one thing i would do is the way you have the rear dog legs hanging i would hang them like they were on the car, you could even hang all of the skirting like it was installed that way you will get a even color coat for each side, just my 2 cent's ....

I'll be doing that. For surfacer, though, this just makes it easy. What I'll be doing is applying the sealer and first coat or two of color on the wall, and then put the car up on jack stands and lay the parts directly under their final destinations to be finished.

I've also got everything hung so that their edges aren't touching the paper.

Since Bill keeps mentioning how difficult it is to spray silver metallic, I dug my brand new passenger fender out of the attic and gave it a scuff. Then came epoxy and then surfacer. After sanding out the surfacer, I applied a reduced by 10% acetone coat of epoxy as a sealer. I was instructed by the paint store that this is not only a common, but the preferred method of applying sealer- especially in michigan...and ESPECIALLY with base/clear. Good enough for me.

Fresh out of the box fender:

Just as the basecoat is about all flashed off
IMG00143 20110611 1447
IMG00144 20110611 1448

I'm going to allow it to continue flashing for a couple of hours before clearing it.

Lookin' good Tom! I'm glad you'll be able to get all of the practice in just in time for me to do mine!
