I'm not out to clutter up the thread you have here, but here are a few pictures. You can see how I did the engine bay with the engine still in - Just in case you're not planning to do it. It was pretty easy as I just removed everything around it and only did the top half of the firewall above the joined seam. It turned out great:

(NOTE: I can delete if you feel they're cluttering up your thread, just let me know, and I'll delete no problem.)

Off topic: It's a 3.2L in there - I drilled and tapped for the correct 3.0L coil pack bracket. :)

PS: Were you the same guy to whom I sent a 3.2L timing belt tensioner for only the SH charge a while ago? If so, that's the engine it came from, Ha.

Don't you dare. :thumb:

Got any pics of the rear window seal, along the roofline?

We really should try to find a suitable replacement seal so that we can paint that channel without buying a new backglass.

BTW:

I'll be working on booth setup tonight so if I feel it's worthwhile, I snap some pics of that.

OK!

I now have all of the supplies to finish up!

Here's a breakdown on the prices for all the paint that I've pruchased.

Keep these MODERATE prices in mind when you shop for a paint job. The "Good Stuff" (deltron) would have doubled the cost...at least.

Epoxy Primer - 1 gallon $106
2k Surfacer - 1 gallon $135
---------------------------------
Primer Subtotal $241

1 Gallon Basecoat : $254
2 Gallons Clearcoat: $336
--------------------------------
Total for topcoats: $590

Grand total for paint = ~ $831

Decent. About what I paid for a new brake setup on the '89.

But yours will be more visible and get the "Oohs" and "Ahs"!!

That's after one coat of clear...two in spots.

I had to give up having only sprayed half a gallon of my 2 gallons of clear. Too many f'in bugs. I got done with the base coat just in time, because there were ZERO bugs in that. I'll have to let it cure for a while before wetsanding and going for coats 2 and 3+.

I'll probably reinstall the bumpers and rocker covers, and loosely install the door cladding before I finish. We'll have to see.

Drooling on the keyboard. That's fantastic - it'll look great.
OCD is a good thing!
Very nice home paint booth too.
Great thread... thanks for posting the process.

That does look awesome, great work Tom! Can't wait to see the finished product. Are you driving this to the GLSS meet at Jim's at the end of the month? Would love to see it. :dribble:

While that's a goal...it's ot THE goal. I'm going to go out there right now and give it a good walk around.

Awesome! I, too, would have loved to have been there and learned a thing or two about painting. That's a nice booth area you have set up as well. Would have been nice to be able to paint my 89.

Here's the number one thing I've learned about the process.

It's really easy to make things a lot harder than they have to be.

Great news...I'm awaiting confirmation but it looks like I won't need to sand out and re-apply clear to the bumper covers and cladding. Since they were on the wall, they didn't get bugs in the clear and I'm told that they'll match the rest of the car just fine - as is. This will save oodles of time and eliminate the need for me to spray any more color.

One more coat of clear on the body and It's reassembly time. :woohoo:

Yeah, but it's like anything else. If you had to do it again, you would do it in half the time.

--& I am SO guilty of this -^^-! seems in all aspects too! lol but I'm a firm believer in 'if your going to do it- do it right or not at all' I just need balance!

-your doing a great job there Tom!!

Yeah, but it's like anything else. If you had to do it again, you would do it in half the time.

More like a quarter of the time. Aside from the month of evenings I spent sanding the gelcoat off the hood, I cant account for more than about a week of evenings and a weekend's worth of work.

Of course, I've still got to put everything back together, so Im not even close to done...but It feels great to be so close to driving it again.
