if I was to paint my intake what type of paint should I use and should I scuff it up so new paint will adhere? And prolly a stupid question but does the intake need to come out or can I do it in the engine bay : if I tape off real good? shrug

You can paint the intake in the car... But that would be pointless as it would look like crap.

You need to take the intake out and completely apart. I used Dupli-color engine enamel... Works like a charm! I ground off all the castings and then sanded the whole thing. If you want it to look really good, thats what you need to do.

At a minimum, take the intake out, take it apart, sand it, then clean it before you paint!

I cleaned it with some simple green then sanded it with 320 grit sandpaper and took to a guy at the local ford dealer body shop and had it painted the same color as the car for 75 for the intake and valve covers.

Is the intake aesy to get out? I could see 4 bolts right away but it cant be that easy could it? Any further info would be appreciated, and yes Jason I agree it would look like crap after I stared at it for a while. Seems like that it would be harder to do all that taping anyhow.

There are way more than 4 bolts... There should be 2 on the end of each set of short/long runners, and a few more on the exterior... Plus you have to remove TB linkage, PCV, etc...

If you don't have a manual and want to know how to do it, here you go!

Thanks for the thread, mayb I'll just leave it for now... I plan on keeping it for a while as it only has 105k on it and I am the second owner. I also know that it went through the ford 120 or 125 point inspection prior to me buying it. It was well maintained by the previous owner so I seem to have gotten way lucky for only paying 2 grand for it thumb

TB linkage? I just remove the 2 bolts on the TB and slide out the manifold pulling towards the passenger side and getting that PITA coolant hose under the manifold, getting better at it down to a 25min removal :D

I also redid an extra intake I picked up recently. I used the Dupli-color engine paint as well. Let me tell you it worked awsome!! I should have pics of it up later today or tomorrow for all to see. I did the runners in gloss black, the crossover and tanks in white and the butterfiles, IAB and throttle body in Ford blue. I also painted the hardware and mounts with the same paint using the colors accordingly. After cleaning the inside of the intake I sprayed the outside and cleaned it with gumout. I then used 400 grit sand paper all around just to further clean and rough it up, then masked it (masking is the biggest PITA when paintiing an intake). The last time I painted an intake I really cleaned the hose clamps so they didn't look like crap but they rusted up really fast. Rather than buy an s-load of stainless hose-clamps I just cleaned them up on my wire wheel and clearcoated them with the Dupli color engine clear coat. I also put a few layers of clearcoat on the hardware that I painted so that the paint didn't get all scraped up during the install. Came out very well and I've already gotten many compliments on it. The best advise I have is take your time. And order an intake manifold gasket set a few days before you decide to do it.

Just did mine a couple weeks ago and I must say that I am amazed at the results. I used a combination of Duplicolor Aluminum-colored Engine Enamel and their gunmetal wheel paint along with a couple of light sprays of clear. All I did was scuff with scotchbrite, and clean well, wiped with a tack cloth, and sprayed. Just look at the results:

I'm happy, and it only cost me about 20 bucks in paint and supplies.

Good luck,

Paul

You may regert clear coating the lighter colors later... Ask Mike(F-22 Raptor SHO) about that one.

I used Dupli-Color engine enamel... VERY brittle until baked on... I had to repaint it after working on the car a few times with out ever turnin it on to bake it.

I only sprayed the clear on the gunmetal, not on the aluminum paint. plus, the clear is the higher temp clear that was meant for the wheels. Shouldn't be a problem. Not to mention, I think I only used like 1 coat on the intake and valve covers due to the fact that I ran out. Worst case scenario, I spend another 5 bucks and paint it again.

It's all good, I just took the pics today, so I'm kinda excited about finally posting them. Your car's the sh*t and I'm just trying to make mine a little better. My car is in desperate need of a paint job, and I just don't have the skills for that. Maybe someday, hopefully before I completely make the decision to sell it. Oh well, I'm goin to bed, later.
