Hey guys, I keep very good track of my gas mileage. SHOs generally have the 18.4 gallon tank, other Taurus models got 16 gallon tanks and only some came with the "long-range" 18.4 gallon tank. I have a 93 ATX and 230-250 is fairly average when I fill up between 1/4 and 1/8 of a tank (about 14-15 gallons). I will try to attach my Excel file I use to compute gas mileage that way you can use it too. I made it so lemme know if I can make it better.

Hmm.. nevermind... I'm still not allowed to post attachments?? A little help.

I typically get around 300 miles on the 1/8 tank mark, anyone know what this calculates to?

Hm. Dis here book says that my car has the optional 'Long-Range" tank at 16.5 gallons. I thought it was standard...

The 18.4 gallon tank must not have been an option until later years  ?

Either way, the gas bill for an 18.4 gallon tank must suck. The 16.5 is bad enough!

According to the Chilton manual and dealer, the SHO only came with 18.4 gal tank. Some says some SHO came with either 16 gal or 18 gal, can anyone verify this?

hmm... i just got 420 miles out of my last tank. that was with regular too... but that was almost to the bottom of the E. still not bad at all. But that was a trip to south padre, on spring break, with some cruises down the beach, and a couple runs on the way down, and back up... not to mention we were doing between 80-100 on the way down...
but i normally average, about 350-375...

Im curious if ford messed up the fuel tanks as well.... you know how they put whatever they had laying around for the sway bars...

Not all SHO's must've come with the 18 gallon tank. My walk light goes on when I use about 13-13.5 gallons. That would mean I have about 3 gallons left, which is pretty consistent with most passenger vehicles. I've never put more than 15 gallons in the tank. That's pushing it for my car.

"Except for some early 1989 models, every SHO came from the factory with some standard features you might consider luxurious compared to other family sedans of its era (and even today!). The extended range options package for non-SHO Tauruses was standard. You couldn't find a Taurus SHO without the following equipment. Features include: half cloth/half leather seats, an 8 way power drivers seat, 4 wheel disc brakes, climate control system, power mirrors, windows, and locks, Ford Premium Audio sound system, 15 inch basket weave wheels ('89 and '90), followed by 16 inch slicers ('91 and up), an extended range 18 gallon fuel tank (although some SHOs came with the SLO 16 gallon tank when supplies were low)." - SHOTimes FAQ

I think that the newer the SHO the less likely to have the 18. I know my 93 has it i have gotten over 500 on a tank before and it took a little over 16 then. Since then i have never let it go below 13 which is right about 1/8 above E... You can also check the part number on the tank but alot of time the sticker has peeled off etc i saw mine recently when i had the fuel pump replaced.

Both my '94 and '95 have the 18.6 gallon tank. The build date was march of 1995, not sure on the '94.

04/91 is birth of my Plus.

My walk light goes on at about 13 used gallons. That would mean I have 5+ gallons left. That's 100+ miles! (if my car was running properly). Thanks for the link. I'll look into this.

Make sure you have a spare fuel pump (to replace the burned up one) and a couple gallons of gas in the trunk and see how far you can go untill the SHO stops. Then count how many gallons go into the tank when you fill it up. If more than 16 you now know.... ;)

I just wanted to use this because I just saw it and it is cool... :snicker: :hpoop:

Acually, when I last changed my fuel pump I ran the tank very dry before I changed it so that I wouldn't have to deal with a lot of gas in the tank. When I pulled the pump the tank still had a considerable amount of gas in it, enough that the pump suction was still in the gas (my needle was buried in the red E, and the light was on for 30-45 miles). After replacing it and driving to a close gas station I filled it up with 16.x gallons of gas. So, I know that I have an 18 gallon tank. As for seriously finding out I'm not sure, but i'm sure their is a way.

Yes, but you also want to consider the purpose of why the light turns on early before you go driving on it for days. Unless you want to replace pumps...

Almost all fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel being pumped through it, submerged or not. All pumps must be cooled in some way or another so they don't burn out.

This is true. However, a pump will stay much cooler being submereged than it will be just pumping fuel. Staying submereged will extend the life of the pump. I'm not saying that running it down will **** a good pump (it might **** a dying one though  ). I am just saying to keep a pump healthy and cool it would benefit it not to let it run low all the time.

I know a lot of Chevy pumps die because owners habituously run them low. But, that is why I own a Ford....
