I very highly recommend synthetic oils as they flow well in cold weather and can be safely changed at 5k mile intervals, and engine wear is at least as good as non synthetic! Assuming 25k miles a year here's how it lays out. Non-Synt $1.50 a quart x 5=$7.50 +$10 filter =$17.50 x 8 changes =$140. Synt $4.50 x 5=$22.50 +$10 ftilter=$32.50 x 5 changes =$162.50 difference of $22.50 AND you don't have to change oil 3 times and less "waste" and better protection. Even Click & Clack say at least 5000m Have a nice day!

When your engine makes it to a quarter of a million miles with those 5,000 mile change intervals, please let me know. I'm curious to know if it works, but I'm not willing to test it on my engine.

Scott my friend, my 89 had 190k miles on it when it "succumed" due to "we think" a head gasket gone bad which allowed oil/coolant into a cylinder and then KABOOM. Just before that occurrence we had performed a leakdown/compression test and it was like new. I run my sho to redline every day and have always used Mobil 1 in all my vehicles. My 89 now has 256k miles (second engine has 126k mlles). When we partially took apart the Kaboomed engine it was wicked clean with no varnish, etc. and ran strong until death.

The amsoil guys are getting 20k+ miles from the oil and 12K from the filters. With the dual remote bypass filters you can go much further. If I drove huge amounts of hiway miles I'd look into it. Would I do it to an SHO?? Probably not.

What if the car sits a lot? Do you wait 5 months to change the oil if you've only driven, say 2000 miles?

They crack me up, Click and Clack "The Tappet Brothers".

Michael Feldman, "What do you know" is also great. I like those "cold calls" to the city of the week, sometimes the people can't think of anything remarkable in their town.

NPR rocks!
