What is safe to run in our cars?

I usually run 10-30w year round, but I wanted to run something a little heavier this summer.

I was thinking about running some 20-50w

Any input would be great :)

I have used 4 L of 10-30 and one 15-40 in the summer months only with no ill effects and lots of oil pressure. I do track this car as well. Not sure if I would go with just 20-50 if it was daily driven.

How many miles are on your car? Does it currently use oil? What makes you want to jump up in oil viscosity?

I have always ran 10w30 in my SHO. It only gets to the 30-40's here in the winter, and we usually have several months of 100+ weather. She has always been fine.

I believe that if you use a synthetic 10-30, no matter the temp., you'll be fine. Personally I use Castrol, some prefer Mobil 1. Mobil 1 is easier to find in larger than quart containers.

I'm a fan of Valvoline MaxLife 10-30. It's a synthetic blend and does a nice job without being the cost of full synthetic. Engine seems quite happy compared to the regular stuff.

I would not want to run 20W50 in one of these engines, although I believe I have read of others who do. 0W40 synthetic is what I would recommend for maximum protection, if you believe you need something thicker than 30wt. I have been using Mobil 1 for 20+ years, but other synthetics are good, too.

Mobil 1 fan myself and was thinking about switching to another brand because I couldn't find a 20w-50 by mobil 1.

After reading that and some other info, I will give that a go and see how she likes it :)

on a side note, where the crap does the oil go in our cars? Mine doesn't leak a drop yet I have to top it off at least once a month!

Use what the Owner's Manual calls for, it's that simple. Use a high mileage oil if you are experiencing oil consumption.

I run 5w-40 (Rotella T) in my engine. It doesn't see winter, so I'm not worried about cold starts in that respect.

Still be mindful of heat with either of dyno or synthetic.

what is the advantage of high mileage oil?

Sometimes they are a synthetic blend (the good ones IMHO). Why synthetic is good is a discussion for google to answer. Almost all contain detergents that break down carbon build-up and gunk over time, cleaning the engine out some. A lot also have some additives that help soften up and expand/swell bad seals and gaskets to help them seal better.

It's one of those things where it won't fix a leak/problem if you got it, but using it will help prevent or prolong you getting it initially. So, if your engine already has a bad leaks, your screwed. If it's just sounding a little rough and starts burning more oil between changes without noticeable leaks then it's a good time to start.

For me it's only like another $1-2 a quart compared to the castrol GTX I would run otherwise. Plus, I do notice a smoother feel from the engine then conventional.

At least, that's my opinion and take on it. Your mileage may vary.

I will be using the OEM recommended 5W-30. I bought the car in Nov '09 and it got an oil change at my work a few days before the owner decided to trade it in for a focus. So when i pull the SHO out of storage, i'll throw in 5W-30 Amsoil synthetic. I plan on only using the SHO in the summer.

Oil is a sticky subject. Too many opinions and not enough facts. I hit up the bobistheoilguy.com forums every now and then to try and sort though the garbage and get some facts. Since i never got a straight answer on what would be the best oil to use in an only summer driven car, i just decided to stick with OEM requirements.

I use to run mobil 1 synth in my 2007 Malibu but recently switched to Amsoil. I can get it for the same price as mobil 1 and it offers better protection.

I run 10-40 as it has a higher burn off temp then 10-30. Might try that.

Oil change on saturday, might try that and high mileage all in one shot and see how that goes.

Lucas Oil caused some issues, you can read my previous post about blue plume of smoke in the mornings.

So far this is what I have, oil vanishes, I have no leaks but would like to protect against them.

Mobil1 High Mileage 10W-40 Synthetic sounds like the winner :)

Thanks for all the input guys!

If you are going to use M1, I'd again suggest 0W40 - no negatives compared to 10W40 and it gets to operating viscosity a little quicker because its not so thick when cold = being able to mash on it sooner! And its certainly got more Group IV in the package, so it should have longer usable life.
