So first of all, I'm not a 50 something, I'm 31. I've turned wrenches on every car I've owned from oil changes to LS turbo swaps. On top of that I've been working in the auto industry since I was 16, starting as a detailer, all the way through tech, all the way into the body shop side of things where I am currently as estimator. My knowledge doesn't come from a quick google search but from actual experience and tech information. So when you sit there and throw insults with all that "non-backed up with evidence/experience" information at us, yeah, we're gonna slowly start to get miffed. This community, as awkward and crazy as we are, believe it or not, actually have more knowledge collectively than you do. So while you sit there in your belief that using the an oil that your engine is not designed for is some how smarter than using the type recommended by the people that built the engine, you look like a fool. Hurling insults is usually the first tell of someone who is often insecure about themselves and/or their knowledge and is often wrong.
Now if you want to, feel free to show us evidence that using thinner oil is better than the recommended and won't cause unnecessary harm to the block, or that thicker oil works better in summer and doesn't put additional strain/wear on the rotating parts I'll be more than happy to side with you. Unfortunately, you won't find that, because every oil manufacturer (you know, they guys that make the oil) specifically warn against doing exactly what you're doing.
