Hey guys, me again. While I had my tranny getting rebuilt at AAMCO I had them change out my rear main seal. The insisted that they should remove the oil pan to do so because they claim they called up some local shops to ask about that and a few guys apparently told them that you can't get the job done correctly without removing the oil pan. So to simply remove the oil pan to do the job they wanted to add more labor to the deal. I needed it done, so I went with what they suggested.

Well they got everything back together today and my dad went and picked the car up for me. Not even 10 miles up the road the oil pressure light came on and the car apparently died out. I didn't get a good description from my dad of what exactly happened because he was asleep when I got home. So I heard the vague description from my mom, who doesn't know the difference between a coil spring and a valve cover. But it sounds like the oil pump to me. Never had a problem with it before, but from what my mom told me she said my dad told her that the car was getting pretty hot on the way back home and I guess shortly after that is when it stalled.

I'm guessing the guys removed the oil pump possibly to change the rear main seal and did something wrong when putting it back together. You guys think they might have removed the pump? Any other ideas what could be the problem? Regardless, the car was towed back to AAMCO and my dad told them to fix the problem. The tow-truck driver said he's almost constantly towing cars back to that shop after people get work done there. Dammit AAMCO! Thanks guys!

There is NO reason to remove the oil pan to replace the rear main seal only. If they replaced the carrier seal, it's possible that you need to remove it, but I can't recall.

My guess is that the car dropped the rpms, causing the oil light to come on, then stall as the rpms continued to go down. Maybe your dad stalled it when the light turned green!

to my understanding ( i dont have a bare block to look at) but the rear main seal is changed with the engine out of the vehicle. or there is ample room to work between the trans and block. the seal presses in and the coolant system cover goes over it.

the oil pump is on the front of the block. if they removed the pan, there is no reason the pump or pickup tube should have been bothered. maybe one of the guys stuffed a rag around the pickup screen and left it there, causing oil starvation. or if it got hot, it could be leaking antifreeze from an improperly sealed rear main cover.

The flywheels does. There's a cover that goes around it, but that's the carrier seal cover.

BTW, there's no need to remove the oil pan to replace either seal.
