I have got an oil leak and will replace the oil pan gasket this weekend. I there anything else I should consider doing while the pan is dropped? Also, is there thing I should be wary of?

if you have the time, do the rod bearings while you have the pan off. also, be sure you get all of the nuts and bolts off before you start prying it off. make sure the mating surfaces are clean and oil-free before reinstalling the new gasket and sealant.

I would definately do rod bearings since you already have the pan off. They are easy after you have the pan off.
-Oil pan gasket set
-Oil pickup tube gasket
-rod bearings, assembly ****
etc.

Good luck

Truth is I am a little nervous about doing the Rod Bearings. In theory it is relativly simple, but then... What is involved? Do you hand crank the engine to the rods in accessible position? Clevite bearings?

remove the spark plugs. it makes cranking the motor via the crank bolt a lot easier. Clevite CB 1435P bearings. doing the bearings itself takes about an hour. the rest of the time is labor getting to them and reinstalling everything.

Seriously, the oil pan is the hardest part of the whole procedure. I did my first set when I was 16 by myself. Hopefully that gives a little confidence.

And make sure you have/have access to a good torque wrench. Its very critical on those caps.

Just did mine under the tutalage of the first and second oldest people on the board. Some day we will release a video of that song.

Follow kurts procedure...PB Blast those manifold studs days in advance of your job. that is the toughest part.

new pan gasket is 16.00 at autozone.

buy some paper gasket maker for the pick up tube

you will be fine.
