Hi all,
I got a possible problem with my 91 SHO with 98k on her. First off I was wondering how much oil do you guys consume on a regular basis? By consume, I mean burn, not leak. I had a few leaks that I took care of during my 60k service (cam cover gaskets, and crankshaft seal), and she no longer leaks any oil, just burns it. I use roughly ¾ of a quart of oil every 800 – 1200 miles. It seems if I drive the car easier, it uses less oil. I also use Castrol GTX brand if that makes any difference.
Problem 1: The thing that has startled me is once in a blue moon, I will start the car up, drive for 1 minute and then will leave a huge plume of blue smoke. It then clears out almost immediately, and won’t do it again for quite some time (4-6 weeks). It’s almost like oil puddles up in the intake over night, and then when I reach the same damn stop sign, it dumps in to the engine, and I fog out the house on the corner.
Problem 2: Last weekend I had my father drive my car, and I followed him to see how much blue smoke was coming out the exhaust at WOT. When the engine was cool it would blow a bit of blue smoke, and then cleared out as the engine warmed up. Is this normal? I know that some high performance engines burn more oil, is this true of the SHO?
Some possible thoughts I came up with for the WOT problem, besides rings, would be oil getting sucked through the crankcase ventilation system. Since this thing dose not have a PCV valve, I thought maybe some of the oil was coming form there. When I did the 60k service I noticed some oil in the intake assembly. I am new to the SHO family, and I am unsure of the history of the car. It’s in nice shape, and looks like it was adult owned before me. Also I use the car as my daily driver and don’t beat the **** out of it, so I was just wondering if this is normal of a SHO. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Adam
