Could all of these symptoms have a common source? All the following may only happen every 1k miles or not for 5k miles and the following parts are new or near new: Starter, battery, Crank Position sensor, Cam position sensor, IAB.
1. Lights on with key but no crank. Try a couple of times and starts great. Sometimes need to tap the solenoid or slap the CCRM.
2. Crank but no start. Again tap or slap parts and starts fine.
3. Cold engine, key on, cooling fan on, crank but no start. Slap or tap and starts.
4. Bucking while driving as if lost cam position.
5. New symptom. Surging when coasting. 1k to 1.5k rpms. Stop at light and it settles down. VSS may be one from swapped tranny and not original. This also shows as a slight surge with cruise control set. Just a slight pulse in the pedal.
6. Butterflies my not be opening. No kick at 4k. No chance to test yet.

Ignition switch, but it is a long shot, like everything else you will hear with the info we have.

replace ccrm that control your fuel pump!also put fuel pressure tester on and turn key on to see if there is any pressure if not slap the ccrm and see if you get pressure if you do its ccrm if not, check pink wire to fuel inertia switch to see if your have power to fuel pump if you do ,then you need a new fuel pump..

Your CCRM is most likely the culprit for symptoms 1 through 3. There is a common relay internal (the little one, I think) to the CCRM that controls all sorts of ignition related stuff. Slapping it knocks loose the hung up relay contacts.
#1 could also be small wire on starter solenoid making poor contact.

Including year and engine/tranny combination is most helpful when asking for advice...

Yes, I forgot there are other years besides the 89 and other colors besides black for that matter.

Haven't had any issues for a couple of months now. Got another CCRM just in case. When the weather gets warmer I will chase down my grounds and clean them all and rebuild the old CCRM.
