Helms says that pin 29 (pink) on the ECU pinout is for 'octane adjust switch' (at least on the 3.2; there is no such pin on the 3.8 taurus ecu). From doing some googling, it seems like on other cars, there is a jumper like the SPOUT connector connected to this pin, and pulling it will retard the timing 3 degrees, adjusting for lower octane fuel. Apparently, dealers pull the plug if annoying customers complain about pinging.
There is no connector reference I could find that says if there actually is a switch or jumper wired up for this. I'm wondering if anyone has seen or played with this pin, if it is wired to a jumper, if there is a table or mapping in the ecu for when this pin is pulled or grounded, and if it actually might improve fuel economy or emissions when running lower octane...?

Thanks for the effort, but I'm not interested in the SPOUT connector; I know where both of those are.

With the car running correctly it will do this on its own if it senses a knock via knock sensor.

You can see from my post here:

I understand that concept too...

Just wondering if anyone (TwEECer types, etc) has some first-hand or anecdotal experience with this pin. It seems to be more prevalent and used in OBD-II cars, there is even a DTC set on OBDII if the ECU input on this pin is wonky. I also saw a post from a Mustang LPM programmer complaining that in one of their chips, superchips cleared the map table data the computer uses if this jumper is pulled. Since there is a map it possibly does more than simply retard timing.

Maybe I'll just trace the pin on my own car, and see if it is pinned and wired. A rotunda breakout box should allow grounding or disconnecting this pin a little more easily, and we can see what happens...

The "Octane Adjust" bar is the SPOUT #2 plug on the SHO engine.

This plug is the one located adjacent to the ignion coil. Rermoval of the plug causes the engine controls to back off a bit to reduce spark knock. Since these engines are monitored by the KS, this plug receives little attention on these engines.

Jay,

In my disassembly and study of the '89-'95 V6 SHO calibrations, I have found no evidence that the octane adjustment pin modifies fueling or any other behiavor - only spark advance. Furthermore, there are several octane-related tables (or "maps") that are utilized by the EEC on these vehicles; however, very few people actually possess access to said tables on the V6 SHO.
