Driving home yesterday in traffic I noticed I was unable to get into 5th gear. far right and up is now 3rd. Far right and down is 4th.

I think the shifter (cable) may be messed up as the other gears are nice and smooth. I'm going to be shopping for a rod shifter to see if this fixes things.

p.s. does every cable-shifted shifter wiggle 3-4" side to side in 3rd gear?? I'm not talking about a little side-to-side play...i mean "lay down" angles.

nope, i fixed the two broken plastic cable holders (1 inside car, 1 under car by tranny) and now mine wiggles less than 1/2". Even with both those things broken it only wiggled about 1-1.5 inches. Something is very VERY wrong with your shifter, dude!

yeah, thats what I figure...par for the course.

Although it's a great fixer-upper.

$100+ rod shufter upgrade
$100+ near rear brakes (caliper siezed)
$500+ full exhaust (y-pipe back)
$700 = cost of car...

I'm still under $1500 for a nice car. Can't beat that with a stick.

check the linkage under the car. Mine did that once and part of the linkage worked it self loose. I think it was the bracket where the cable goes from dropping down out of the firewall towards the tranny.

Sounds like a cable issue, not the connections. If a connection is jacked up, you should still be able to move the shifter all the way to the right. Maybe the cable is binding up?

i've never worked on a car with a cable shifter before so It's greek to me. I'll get under there to look at it.....when I install the rod shifter.
