I don't know too much about this, but it does sound like a bad ground (or an open connection).

You're sure you connected the ground at the back of the intake and the one on the starter stud? (only ones I can think of off-hand) I guess you'll find out if it is your negative battery cable when you replace it.

No my brand new battery is dead. So obviously there is a power drain somewhere. I can not begin to put into words my frustration!!!!

Any ideas? What are some of the most common reasons for a drain. I have yet to replace the cables, which is first on my list. Also, how do you replace the ignition switch? I thought I had done this before, but nothing sprang to mind.

Do you have a meter that will test DC amperage? If so your best bet would be to hook it up and then start pulling fusees and see what fuse is drawing the current. This will give you a area to start looking for the issue.

I've read that a starter can drain a battery like no other!

It could I guess. It has wires directly from the battery and wires directly to devices that are wired to ground.

I will replace it sunday. Then if that does not work, on to the battery cables. After that, time for a major inspection of the entire wiring harness. It almost seems easier to replace it!

The other day I think that you asked how to remove the ignition cylinder. I don't remember if anyone posted a response (I've been reading this thread through the emails and haven't had time to check the actual posts on the forum).

If you didn't get an answer, here's the abridged version.

1. remove steering column plastic shroud.
2 Put key in ignition
3. Turn key all the way back (IIRC)
4. There's a button on the bottom of the ignition cylinder. Press it and full the entire assembly out. That's pretty much it.

I had to start my car once by drilling out the ignition cylinder and using screwdrivers to turn the gear in the cylinder. One of the gears did slip and I think that it drained my battery over night. This was the first night that I ever owned the car. I bought it as a wreck and had it towed to my apartment one cold night. Being the impatient gear heads that we were, we couldn't stand to have an SHO in my driveway and not hear it run. We didn't have the key at that point (we got it the next day-we were so stupid for not waiting) so we drilled out the ignition cylinder. It worked but it took a long time with a 12v drill.

Turns out that I fixed that car instead of parting it out like I planned. I couldn't part out a royal blue SHO.

This sounds familar...didn't Beth have a similar problem? Wasn't it something like a shorted wire for a conector that is not used that got pinched when the trans was installed? It just seems like you are having the same problems, and thats what it turned out to be.

Nope, replaced the ignition cylinder already. I was asking about the ignition switch. I have replaced one before, but it had been awhile. I think it may be the source of my problems (I HOPE I HOPE I HOPE!)

it seems unlikely; the ignition switch is after the fuse box, and usually a shorted wire will draw more than the 5 amps, blowing the fuse. Anythings possible though. I'd start with the meter and start pulling fuses.

Where is the switch located? I thought that it was integrated into the cylinder?

Checked all fuses a while back. Nothing blown. More info tomorrow after I replace the ignition switch.

Nope, and I would not know how to do that.

Did you say "brand new" battery? As in, not been working in a vehicle before?

It should measure much better than 12V with everything off and/or disconnected. Try a _known_ good battery that's fully charged. Just because it's new doesn't mean it's not a candidate for blame when this sort of stuff is going on.

I don't think the 6V at the inertia switch is a good sign, either.

Cleaned ground strap and reattached. Checked all fusible links, but it looks like they have all been replaced (not with link, but just attached to each other, if that makes sense). Changed ignition switch. Checked codes. Exact same scenario. I feel like cursing. And for those that don't know me, that means I am quite upset.
