I stopped at a store on my lunch hour today, car running fine. I come out and it won't crank or start!

All the dash lights are working, windows roll up and down, just like normal. I definitely have power, but when I turn the key, no clicks, no crank, nothing.

It really feels like there might be a wire that came disconnected from the starter or something, the battery cables are fine since everything else works. The lights don't even dim when I try to start it, so there is no power getting sucked out from the battery.

I tried searches but it seems like everyone has a crank but no start condition, mine won't even crank.

Any help?

Thanks

You will have to use a volt meter (or a automotive test light) and see where there is power and where there isn't.

No clicking would indicate that the little wire on the starter may have fallen off. It's just a spade connector so you should have no problem reconnecting it...if thats what happened.

Is that something I can check without jacking the car up? Where is it exactly?

The car is sitting in a parking lot right now.

Thanks

Edit* the spade plug is attached as far as I can tell (doesn't mean it's getting power, I have to test that). I got it towed home so I'll have to poke around this weekend with it, hopefully it's something easy!

When my starter failed, I had the same symptoms. Everything worked as descibed above, turn key, no click / click, nothing.

Is it common for a starter to work one minute and nothing the next? Or do they usually die slowly?

And it is very wet around here with all the snow melting, would driving through a puddle screw up the starter at all?

Thanks

Yes and yes, and yes.

Check the wiring, try the hammer test, and if all else fails replace the starter.
