Okay, went to get my oil and filter changed at Goodyear tires because it's freezing outside and the price wasn't much more than the cost of oil, anywho, they drove it around the block and brought it back to be sure the car works before doing work on it, then they changed the oil and brought it back out, turned off the car and the start tried turning it back on, tried turning it on / off multiple times and it kept trying to turn back on, so the manger came back out and drove it back inside the shop, opened the hood and my starter was on fire, they took the powdery fire extinguisher and went at it under my hood, that stuff was everywhere, I hope it doesn't get in my plug wells or intake, anywho, after that the put it on a lift and I was looking at it, the starter wires were all melted and right above that is....the new filter the just put in, about an inch above, now, personally I believe it's their fault seeing as I've never had my starter catch fire before o_O...car is currently at the shop, what do I do if they try to charge me for repairs?

say they one of their mechanics probably made the wires touch, and if you cant do anything at least try to split the difference with them. Also tell them there lucky they didnt burn your whole car to the ground, oh and make them clean up the dang mess, if thats at all possible. Good luck:thumb:

I just got off the phone with them and they said it'd be $3XX.00 for a new starter + installation -.-

I explained to him that it's kinda odd that the mechanic test drove it around the block just fine, brought it in the shop, changed the filter and oil then immediately after he brings it out it causes this, especially seeing as the oil filter is right above the starter and he would have had to work past it.

The guy tells me that he understand but it's just a weird coincidence.

UGH!!!! I don't know what to do or how to go about it.

are you sure the starter caught on fire? Im not saying that not possible... as when you change the oil, some does fall onto the starter. Now conisdering they ran the car before hand, and afterwards they were starting the cars multiple times (for what reason... ) the starter was probably HOT as ****....

But that doesnt rule out that they could have spilled oil onto the manifold, and thats what caught fire...
like i said, are you sure it was the starter?

It was a tiny fire far far down on the front of the engine, and when they put it back on a lift it was all charred and the wires surrounding it were burnt.

Yes, something was burning, lots of smoke came out from under the hood from th at general direction down there. And the starter doesn't work now + it was burnt so I assumed that was it.

you pay for it...so if you let your friend drive the car and say..the ball joint broke and it caused the tire to crush your fender, would you make him pay for it??? stranger coinced. have and will happen..just feel fortunate that you werent driving it when it happened, because you prob. wouldnt of noticed it until it was too late.
just my humble 2 cents

Not exactly the same issue, It wasn't a friend working on my car, it was a place of business I employed to work on my car, when I'm paying for service I don't expect issues like this.

I was at a shop a few weeks ago talking to somone i know there. He was telling me that he took one of his cars to the Goodyear here in town for an alignment. Well he watched them drive the car onto the alignment rack then got a ride back to his shop.

A couple of hours later they called to say that his car was ready, but it wouldnt start for them. So he went back to goodyear and brought the car back to his own shop. Turns out that one of the MAJOR wire harnesses on the lower fire wall had been cut. Nice CLEAN cut. I wonder what happend there?

I would be very upset.

It's more than a coink-e-****. If they drained oil all over the starter and didn't wipe it up...I would not allow them to fix it. In fact, I would take it to a qualified shop or do the work myself...then, I'd take the bill to the oilchange place that messed up the starter and batt harness. Show them the bill and demand retribution...perhaps 10 free oil changes? They might be more willing to give you free oil changes as opposed to money.

Good luck, don't let em mess witcha!

I'd have to bet that the trigger wire to the starter is cut/burnt, that is if the oil cought on fire and not the starter itself. I'd investigate myself before spending $300+

Whenever I take my car in to do ANYTHING I sit right outside the bay. Im currently enrolled at UTI I know how the procedures go, They know so I make sure they only touch what I need them to.

I Find it HIGHLY awd that they kept starting and shutting off the car. That is not necessary for a simple oil change. Yes start to get in the bay, start to get out, but your not messing with anything that would require you to Start and Shut off the motor like you described.

Its not enough to file small claims either. A new/reman starter costs only half of what they want to charge. I would do it myself, and just make sure you never recommend that shop.

I go to the BIG O Tires shop here in So cal to get my stuff done (only what I cant) but I know all 4 managers, and the Owner. They don't mess with MINE or anyone elses car.

Sucks what happened though.
