So last week I decided to replace my leaky water pump on my 93 ATX. I got down to everything and replaced the water pump per the procedures that Ive found on shotimes and in a Chiltons manual. Anyway, the only part im confused about is how to properly put on the Timing belt. I turned the crank so it lined up on the oil pump housing mark, and I also turned the Cam sprockets so the small indention on the sprockets matched with the marks on the housing (12 o'clock). Also I had the belt marked so it went on exactly how it came off.

So after putting it all back together I went to fire it. It turned the key and it fired for less than a second then stopped. I went to try it again and it just cranks... It doesn't sound weird or anything. No metal on metal sound or and weird valve out of sync sound. Just wont turn over. I did take the CPS out and re-installed it because I didn't buy a replacement. I used a feeler gauge to gap the sensor to .03 like it suggests. Could the sensor be the cause for it not to fire? Also how do I know if Cylinder 1 is at TDC?

Also, on the Camshaft sprockets, one of them lined up perfect, almost as if it just "fell" into the correct position. The other one, however, wasnt so easy. I had to turn it until it lined up, but it almost seemed like it was inbetween a rotation or something. Im trying to be as descriptive as possible. If you have anymore questions that might solve my problem please let me know. Thank you all very much!!!

Sounds like you put the timing belt on right. Check on shopheionixprodject.com (spelling ?). Im pretty sure they have pics of a timing belt install as part of the 60k section. Do you have spark? Do you have fuel? For TDC on cylinder #1 you can put a wooden dowel or long screwdriver in through the spark plug hole and turn the crank until it hits the peak.

Does the fuel pump make a buzzing noise for 1-2 seconds after you turn the key to the ON position? Does the tach indicate ~400 RPM when you are cranking? It agree with the comment from the earlier post that stated your timing belt installation sounds correct.

I can hear the fuel pump prime when I put the key in the ignition and turn it to the on position before I actually try and crank it over. I didnt look at the RPM's to see if they went around 400 when cranking.

If the CPS was not right, what would happen?

Also, what would be a sign of the timing belt being installed incorrectly?

I believe im getting spark, seeing as nothing on that side has changed at all.

sounds like you may have gotten the cps installed w/ too large of gap on the top, which is very easy to do. the sensor has a magnet on the bottom part, which wants to stick itself to the shutter wheel on the crank sprocket. if you tighten it up like that, it will destroy the cps very quickly, which fits your symptoms perfectly.

I know it doesn't sound fun right now, but I think you need to pull it all apart again and look at the cps.

btw, if you line up the crank sprocket mark like you said, you have the engine at tdc on #1, and you don't have to do any of that foolishness about poking stuff into the cylinder like is described in post #2.

Well I think you're right. Im gonna take it all apart and look at it. I just went online and bought a new cps so Ill have a fresh one to install just in case. Also, when installing the CPS, you put it in and then turn the crank so the metal part is by the sensor then you set it correct?

So you're saying that I might have damaged the sensor from it being overtightened?

No, that the gap may have been larger than what you thought, which makes the gap on the bottom side non-existent.

Ok. Well I did check out the Phoenix website and will attempt to fix it when I get the new sensor in.
