Hey, just picked up a beater 89 SHO for my winter car, the car didn't run and the previous owner had it checked out for a possible CPS failure, but since the starter was toast I couldn't confirm.

So, I have replaced the Starter, and the engine cranks and starts up right away, runs smooth. Stop and stop a few times no problems, no CE lights either. Now when it is started, the Tach reads around 1200 rpm, which is too high for idle, and it stays there. When driving the tach doesn't rise normally, it starts to move around 3K RPMs or so, and rises quicker than my 8lb flywheeled SHO. SO that is definately not working good. Drove around for about 5 minutes in two seperate trips with no problems.

I am wondering if this is a definate CPS problem or is this something else. Old owner stated car used to die on him whenever it felt like and then would start again after anywhere from about 30 mins to a day.

You stated that there were no CE lights, but you didn't say whether or not you actually checked the EEC codes. Do so. You may find either a code for the CID sensor or both the CID and CPS. Depending upon the outcome, the problem could be anything from a bad DIS module ground or connection to a failing CID sensor. Since the engine wasn't cutting out, the CPS alone is an unlikely culprit.

SHO Off,

There is a five part test for the DIS (EEC-IV) and the associated components, including the CPS to Control Unit, SPOUT to DIS Module, IDM to Control Unit, CID at sensor, and Coil Power.

Keep in mind that a "code" means that the computer did not get the "expected" signal. It could mean that a sensor is failed, or that the connection is bad, or that the wire is shorted or open.

The test will lead you in the right direction.
If you cannot find it, I'll post it again. rangerj

Ok thanks, I'll try to see whats up. ALthough I may try swapping in another DIS module, since one connection side almost slips out, we are going to tie strap it down, someone broke the connector so some engine movement may knock the cable a bit loose. I haven't really driven the car for more than 5 mins so I can't really say whats happening. Thank for your help.
