Well, thanks to Bradman and my friends (mostly for moral support) we got the SHO running for the first time since we got it from the junkyard. Anyway, now we are on to the next problem. The junkyard guy said that the previous owner had a knock in the engine.

Holy shit I had no idea what to expect. This "knock" is as loud as the engine. Rod bearings? Anything else?

Ah yes, and would a bad Throttle Position sensor make the car idle at 3000 RPM?

well, im not sure about the TPS, but is the engine knock proportional to RPMs or steady? there have been a number of recent posts on rod bearings and they all suggested getting a mechanics stethoscope and getting under the oil pan to listen so you can really know. hopefully someone else can help. but if it is the bearings and the previous owner was driving with bad bearings for a while, you might not be too happy with the fix. but you should drain your oil and see if it has metal shavings in it, or in the filter. good luck, hopefully some more info will come your way.

yes, problably rod bearings. Get one of those mechanics stethescopes and do some probing. Only run the engine unless u aboslutly have to.

as for the TPS making your car idle at 3000rpm, well i cant help you out there...sorry.

on guessing, i dont think the TPS is your problem, but when you solve the knocking problem perhaps an idle reset will fix your other problems, or a test for engine codes should hopefully tell you if the TPS is out of range.

I would run codes, but I don't think that it is healthy to run the engine like that. Plus it makes my head hurt.

I asked some guy at Schucks and he said (after telling him the same thing) that I'd probably have to get the bearings and rods replaced and get the crank turned. All of that makes my head spin.

I don't think that the knock is proportional to the engine being reved, but I will double check.

Chances are if the noise is as loud as you describe due to a spun/failed rod bearing, that the crank is probably damaged to the point that new bearings won't fix anything. You'll probably have to have the crank reground and use oversize bearings, or try to find a good used crank.

Is it fairly self explanatory when I look under the car whether the crank is damaged? What exactly am I looking for?

Devin,
I believe you'll have to remove the Y-pipe, pull the oil pan, then remove the rod end caps to check the condition of the rod bearings and the crank.

All,
When I looked at Devin's car, it appeared that the previous owner had just done a front end 60K (new water pump, CPS, timing belt). The car wasn't running yet when I was there and I couldn't get the upper timing belt cover off to verify proper timing. If timing is not correct, could it cause a knock this bad?
