My fiancée just informed me that the 98 had to be towed back to the house. Cams went i'm guessing. It lasted over 220,000 miles not being welded so I guess i'm lucky in that respect. It sounds horrible, like one entire bank is missing or out of time. Should I tear it down and see what I can find or just put it up for sale? What is this car worth generally not running? Trans was rebuilt 6 years ago.....just kinda at a loss here as to what to do with this car.

Should I get rid of the car or the fiancée?

There is an easy test to this one......mention you are going to replace it with another sho. If she doesn't leave or get angry, you have a keeper.

Also, if it toasted the engine, I'd be interested in the bare block.....I want a lightweight coffee table. :omgsho:

Also where can I find info on the timing chain and timing procedure....I've used the search feature but it doesn't seem to be working. I'm hoping it just slipped a few links but I know that is wishful thinking on my part.

I tried searching for the procedure, but I couldn't find any how to's anywhere. I did find this link showing their routing though. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2556346/1999-ford-taurus/page-2/
If it is like any other chain driven car, you will have a tensioner somewhere(hydraulic or spring) and then maybe some guides.....it has been a long time since I've done anything with a v8.....too long I suppose.

Thanks for the info. It may not matter though, from reading around here it seems, if the chain slips it ruins the engine anyway.

Yea, they unfortunately are a ticking time bomb. And a whole bank missing out is definitely a bad omen.

Pull it apart and see what it needs. Word has it you can re-use the head gaskets, the other gaskets, and all the bolts. Get another head (with straight valves) on this forum, and with some luck, you could be back in business.... with nothing more than your maintenance / wear items. Really depends on the top of your pistons.
