mtx tranny problem

shortly after starting up and pulling away from my friend's house, i got into 3rd gear and the car started to buck a little, so i pulled over. i put it in 1st and tried to drive off again and the car started to move but all of the sudden the tranny locked up and the car bounced like an automatic car would when it is put into park. i repeatedly tried to go forward and reverse, but each time this would happen and sometimes the car would die completely. also, a few times when the shifter was in the neutral position, i was not able to let the clutch out because something was still engaged inside the tranny. the car would not try to move, but it would start to bog like it would when letting the clutch out in gear. it can't be driven so i had it towed home and looked underneath at the linkage. it's a 94 so it has the rod shifter and i was able to shift cleanly thru all the gears using the rod itself. everything looks ok (i've been under there and have seen how it looks when working right). it appears to be linkage related, but whatever it is, it's inside the transmission, so im at a loss for ideas on how to go about fixing it. if anybody knows of a way to get at the internals without taking out the tranny id appreciate if you would tell me. other than that, any comments or advice would be a huge help so please post if you have any ideas. i don't want this to be the end of my SHO!

it had a new clutch and TOB put in 2 or 3 years ago. im not saying you're wrong but i forgot to mention that. also, when my dad was trying to figure out what's wrong with it, he said it seemed like it is in 2 gears at once, hence the reason we thought it might be linkage related. thanks for the input though.

i just read a post about tranny pan gaskets and i was wondering where the pan is and how to take it off. somebody also mentioned something about a cover on the tranny that is held with 3 8mm bolts. im going to go take another look at it now but if somebody can tell me where either one is it would be a big help.

The MTX trans does not have a pan. The ATX does.

The only way to get to the internals of the MTX trans is to pull the trans from the car.

i just took another look at my tranny and found a nice big crack in the case so it looks like i will be replacing the whole thing. do you or anyone else know what it takes to pull and install a tranny on an mtx car? we have put so much money and labor into this car already i'm trying to see how much more is actually worth doing.

sucks about your problem, but, personnaly speaking, with my love for SHOs, there are no price to keep those cars who isn't made anymore on the road.

i totally agree with you. but for a kid like me who is about to graduate high school and then go off to college, money is a pretty big issue. i think i'm gonna go ahead and do the swap though. this is gonna give me time to do a few other things i've wanted to do but haven't had the time for such as intake and caliper painting and a few other odds and ends. thanks to everyone who replied. i may be back looking for more input as the work commences

best advice I can offer is to get the How to Video on replacing the Clutch from SHONUT Performance (a sponsor here on the forum). I had never done a tranny before on the SHO and with the video it was a snap.

i also recommend the video i got my tranny out in 3 days and that was with work and school and i had never done a clutch/tranny before... with the video it was a big help

The first time I did a clutch service, it took me over a month
But I also did a full suspension job, as well as working 50+ hrs a week

Ive done enough clutch jobs now, that I can get the tranny out in less than 20 minutes

im doing my first tranny too, no video just a CD service manual off of ebay... helps alot actually (for 10 bucks its almost a steal) id recommend that... id guess its taken me a combined total of 4 hours to remove the tranny (with alot of screwing around) ive done alot of other things too, so its hard to say...
