mtx question

my 89 mtx just "lost" reverse....shifts great into first 4 gears and 5th with a little more finesse....no grinding just wont engage reverse.from under the car i can watch the shift rod into transmission and it moves smoothly in all but reverse where it seems to hit a lockout or something......hopefully someone can give me an idea where to look

This happened to me and it turned out that a bolt in the transmission casing had fallen out and all the fluid had leaked out. Exact same symptoms. Replaced bolt and fluid and it works fine now.
