Ok, the SHO is in getting a new clutch, TOB, etc...and I'm draining the 5 speed...

I can't get Redline D4 anywhere around here, a shop here has Redline synthetic ATF, and thats it.

What else can I put in this manual tranny, hopefully I'll have the car back today...

The Ford Owner Guide that came with my 1991 SHO specifies 6.2 pints (3.1 quarts) of either Type F or MERCON ATF. I have used Type F with the Motorcraft Friction Modifier (available through the Ford parts counter) with the same shift feel as the Redline D4 ATF that I had before the last clutch change.

I use Amsoil full synthetic auto trans ****, as recommended by Ford instead of manual oil, its about as good as Redline and more available. I have had excellent results from it.

Scott is right on - you want an automatic trans fluid with some friction to it. That's what the Ford gurus say this tranny needs. You don't necessarily need Redline or any magic or cult transmission fluid. The regular stuff will do. If you can't get every drop out of the tranny, just fill it up til it drips out and replace the plug. Then, in a few months or whatever, change it again. ATF is inexpensive and readily available, and the plugs are right on the lower front, really easy to get to w/o jacking up the car.

I got the GM Synchromesh stuff, I saw in another forum where a guy in a Toyota was complaining about the shift into reverse grinding. He put some of that GM Synchromesh tranny oil in it and it stopped all together...I'll let you guys know how it works in the SHO..I've also read where a lot of peeps in the mitsubishi's are running this stuff too..

I should have the car back today....hopefully, this little jetta turbo diesel is waay to slow.. :D

Either your car is higher off the ground than mine or you have a 4" thick chest. wink

The reverse gear grinds because it is not synchronized... either drop it in reverse before you start the engine or shift to 4th or 5th gear, then right into reverse gear to avoid grinding it.

Got the SHO back out of the shop yesterday....ahhh....feels much better.. Like a new car again..

The GM SynchroMesh tranny fluid works great (at $10.00 a quart it aught to).. Much smoother than before. It did affect reverse a little If I hold the clutch in for a second I don't need to put it in another gear first. All other shifts are great. That fluid is a blend.

Ended up replacing the clutch, PP, TOB, clutch fork, freeze plug (one had a slow leak),rear main seal, pan gaskets, axle seals, tranny seals, shifter cable, inner tie rod, starter gear and the short rod with the ball joints in the front suspension....Oh and new tires.. I think thats it...came out a little over $1200..

She will get a bath today... :D
