I was asked about the bushing at the bottom of the shifter handle that connects to the cables in the MTX cable shifter. I replaced my cables with the rod linkage about 10 years and 200,000 miles ago and didn't save the parts. Does anyone have any information about repairs or sources for replacements for this bushing?

My 92 MTX has very clunky shifting. Sometimes I really have to work the gears to get it into them.

Clutch replaced 7k ago.

Could be a worn cable? 103K on car.

Probably pick your brain this weekend on the run.
Thanks,

Not a cable because you have a rod shifter. Mine is the same way. I checked the joint clost to the Trany as per Scott's fix and there was no play there. None, I couldn't believe it. It must be in the joint in that little black box under the shifter. Any one know how to get at it. My car is a little rusty under there too, so it probably wont be fun.

Scott,
That same bushing is worn out on my car and causing the cable to pop off the end of the shift handle. According to the dealerships, Ford doesn't make replacement parts for them anymore. You have to buy the whole cable. If you do get lucky and find replacement bushing somewhere, please let me know!

Scott, did they mention which cable do they need the bushing for?
I have fabricated a end bushing for the Gear selection cable (used in forward-backward movement). This cable has a hard (metal maybe) ring molded at each end, and a bushing fits in there between the ring and the trans/shifter end). A bushing can be fabricated out of metal/plastic, or a rubber stopper can be used, if it fits the cable.
Btw what I did was, I made a bushing using JBWeld (mine was lost during a clutch job). I have it on the car for 2 years now and it works fine.
Also, I have some extra cables (used) in my garage. Let me know which one they need.

Talking to Nick Chrimes last fall, I brought up all the cable shifter bushings, as I found some outside the car, that seemed to be missing. He said Josh T at SHO nut makes most of the ones you need. Contact him and he should be able to hook you up.

To clear up any confusion, the cable shifter bushing in question is NOT in my car. In the first post I stated that I installed the rod shifter in my car 10 years ago. This was a question someone had asked me that I didn't have an answer to. I am looking for your help in order to assist this SHO owner.

Thanks,
Scott
