Just thought I would update this. Back in may I was getting 20mpg full hwy driving to the dragon after running the **** out of it on the way back I got 25mpg guess I cleaned a lot of crap out of the engine. Then I ran 93 octane 0% ethanol through the car for three or so tanks. Last weekend went back to the dragon I got 29mpg :D 12 gallons 375 miles getting better mpg than my mothers miata which is only getting 23. The whole trip up I was going 80mph+ 3100rpms or so. Haven't calculated my mpg back as my catastrophic wheel bearing failure I haven't driven it. When it failed it took my 2 month old cv axle as well as the hub with it. Pretty grewsome cv axle grese is everywhere.

A little ATF in with your fill ups will help with that.
IIRC 2-3oz per gallon will clean everything up nicely.
29 highway is just about right though.

Wow, I wish my 93 ATX would do 25 or better. I have done all of the maintenance and changed out everything that I can think of. Running Champion plugs tho. But still up here in the NW we have to run 10% ethanol in our fuel. So that may be part of the problem. I drive 90 miles to the Coast every other week and my best mpg was 21. No codes either.

Only 3-4 gas stations around with 93 octane and no ethanol. It's also like 10-15 cents more a gallon than other places with ethanol.

The ATX kills it for gas mileage.

The dragon being Tail of the Dragon? If so there may be an alternate explanation.

These cars always seem to have a touch of rear brake drag, causes include caliper pin alignment, corrosion crushing the brake hose at the strut holder, and corrosion in the e-brake cable causing incomplete release.

The best highway mileage (~ 30 mpg) I got on the highway was after the road course event (NHIS) at the convention two years ago. They key was never applying the e-brake after the event (adjusts the pads inward towards the rotor). The flex in the rear hubs/brake rotors under hard cornering wears the brake pads back a hair, getting rid of the drag. Thats why I think you got better mileage during/after Tail of the Dragon.

To check for rear brake drag, set your e-brake as normal for parking on a steep hill, then release. Then take it out on an uncrowded highway and run it for a few miles (no braking), letting the car coast to a stop someplace safe. Feel the rear spokes/caliper for heat.
