dont know exactly where this goes... so i will post it here.

This is my First MTX car...

What is the best spot for optimal MPG?

i heard 2100rpms?

Lets say you are going 40mph in 4th gear.... 2100rpms....

Lets say you are going 40mph in 5th gear.... 1700rpms....

The 4th gear would get better gas mileage right?

im just trying to figure it out as i daily drive...

overdrive should not be used till you doing 60+ mph.

What i usually do is shift at every 10 mph, 1st till 10 mph, 2nd till 20mph, 3rd till 30 mph, and 4th to 40mph.

Sometimes i'll stretch them out some more, but thats how i usually shift.

MPG i usually see is, 21 mpg in the city. Highest i got was 29 mpg monstly hwy. :)

If you still have your owners manual, it says when to shift...

2nd - 17mph
3rd - 27mph
4th - 35mph
5th - 44mph

It also states that you can shift into 3rd and 4th sooner if you're looking for better gas mileage. I wouldn't shift into 5th any sooner than 44mph. I generally shift into 5th at 50mph when just cruising.

Thats a SLO owners manual.

The SHO ones tells to shift all speeds @ 7500. for maximum spooked faces.

Except for the stock SHO won't let you rev the motor that high ;)

I'd leave it in 4th. I'd rather keep the motor spinning freely from lugging and also keep up the oil pressure.

I throw it in 5th if its a flat road but if its got almost any hill, definitly 4th.

Well unfortunately not all of us are well off enough to buy a 500hp Shelby and not worry about gas mileage ;) I have a 66 mile r.t. commute to ASU and putting myself through college makes money tight. I think the SHO is a great compromise between performance and economy.

My previous cars MPG: 1994 Nissan Altima 22city/ 26 highway, 1993 Turbo AWD Talon 19city/20hwy. My SHO is slightly faster, but gets way better mpg than the Talon and way faster than the Altima 4 cyl. and almost equal in gas mileage. Plus the SHO is a perfect highway cruiser/carver, very smooth and stable at 80mph, but you all know that :thumb:

I do not literally own a 500 hp mustang. That was a rhetorical comment to illistrate the contradiction of owning a performance automobile and wanting economy in mpg. If one wants economy one buys an economy car, like a Focus or a Pinto and lives with it:snicker:. You do not buy a performance automobile and then cry because it gets low mpg as a trade off for all the FUN.;)

On the other hand, one of the benefits of owning and driving one of these cars is that they're a bit underrated.

I can't say that my rare '93 Emerald Green ATX is box stock, because I'm the forth owner, and I just don't know. I do know that it was EPA rated back in '93 at 16/26. This summer, I've averaged 21 in the sh*tty stop and go traffic here in the Kent Valley, and 32 mpg on a trip to Portland Ore and back.

That's better than my auld '94 Sable {3.8L} got..... the Sable's rating was 19/29, and I actually averaged 17.5 here in town, and 30 on the freeway.

That's also better than most of the new "midsize" V6's are rated at. And probably better than many of the four cylinder "midsize" vehicles actually get......

This for a car that's kinda fun to drive......

do you not like good gas mileage? do you like spending as much money as possible when youre not using the performance of the car? or do you just always drive at WOT... i always wondered what kinda gas mileage you get at 143MPH...

Buy a Honda? I would not wish that on my worst enemy. On the highway with the cruise control set for 70 to 72 mph I average between 29 and 30 MPG. The tach reads between 2600 and 2700 rpm. In city traffic the MPG drops. I try not to let the tach drop below 2000 rpm (minimum) so as not to lug the engine and live with the mpg. For me, economy or mpg was not a consideration in buying a SHO. It still isn't. :salute:

What kind of driving, what car?

That really doesn't look that bad if most of the driving is "city" driving........

2nd gear.

when i had my SHO, i got consistent 23MPG in the city and 30+MPG on the highway. my city driving consisted of 6500-7000RPM shifts and high rpm cruising. it was not unusual for me to drive around in second gear at 45MPH for miles at a time. as for my highway driving, i switched to the owners manual recommended shifts, at every 3K RPMs.

but there is more to mileage than the RPMs you shift. mantainance is the big key.

95 mtx........ about 65 city/45 highway.......Until i read this and some of the other threads i was shifting at about 2100 rpms so i would cruise around town at about 1500 rpms.... could that have been the reason to the crappy mileage???? I will try driving close to the manual and find out the average again
