I'm about to install my sub and amps in my trunk. All told, we're talking about 80 lbs of stuff, pretty normal for an aftermarket system I'd expect.

What concerns me is what would happen in a frontal collision. The g-forces would be sure to break any "normal" bracket mounts I have on the box and drive it through the back seat.. dont wanna think of how bad that could hurt someone.

You'd think that the manufacturer would have to make the seats strong enough to stop luggage from imploding the seatback, but I've seen several pictures of crashed cars that had stuff in the trunk (20-30 lbs) that caved in the rear seat back upon impact. Granted, it didnt come THROUGH, but 80 lbs probably would have.

Has anyone here taken any heavy-duty precautions for preventing their sub box from entering the cabin during a crash?

I should probably be more worried about it being stolen, since that's more likely.. but a stolen sub isn't gonna literally **** anybody.

As long as everything is secured down in the trunk, I don't think you will have a problem, but if you wanted to for peace of mind you could just cut a piece of plywood to go accross the seatback and bolt/screw it in to the vertical post there and the wheel wells.

In my sable I had a box that went all the way across between the wheel wells, and all the way up to within 4 inches of the package tray. I bolted it to the vertical support from inside the cabin with two lag bolts, that was basically to protect it from getting ganked, although it never moved on me either.

yeah......dont crash thumb finger evil_gri
Good idea. I think I'll take out the seatbelts and airbag while I'm at it to make up for the weight I added with the subs!

93... should have 2 airbags.

Bolt the box to the trunk floor from inside the box. It won't be going anywhere.

Unless there's an airbag hiding in the dashboard somewhere, I think my 93 has only one airbag..

Thanks, I'll take a look at bolting it down to the trunk floor.

MusicCitySHO, 92 and 93 both had optional passenger side airbags. They didn't become standard until 94. Just for the record...

I have 2 10's in my trunk and the box, when put in the trunk squarely just fits between the strut towers and will hit the rear "H" brace setup behind the seats. ive been rear ended and had a frontal collision with the box in the back and it didn't move foreward or backward for that matter.

I don't know if its different with the other gens, but the box I have now is held down by the actual weight of the setup.

If you want to do something, much like the plywood idea to stiffen that area, why not weld a piece of steel on the trunk side going across the seats? shrug

You could use one of those pickup tailgate nets to keep stuff in the trunk under severe conditions. Cheap, strong and lightweight.

Just do what I did have a metal plate welded behind your amps like I did here on my last SHO:
amps.jpg

A small side effect from this is 200% improved security no way there coming out unless the whole car is taken, not some easy screw off and cut the wires job here  . Also my box had 3 braces to hold it in place too, one on each side and one behind it in front of the amps.
