WEll have a 93 atx and it only has 160k and its done. I went to walmart first mistake and had oil change done didnt have time to do it myself this week. Now the rod bearings are making noise at 2k rpm and anything over that forget it. So i have decided to save money and replase motor. MY frist question is how much of a pain do you think it is going to be and how long to do the swap. Can the old motor be saved? Is it possible to also do a 3.0 in with an atx?

Atx's all came with 3.2's. As far as the motor swap it all depends who is doing it and how in depth you want to go. Some people can do it in a weekend while some it takes a month.

Doesn't Wally World use recycled oil? If you have to go someplace like that for an oil change at least go buy the good oil and have them put it in for you.... and WATCH them put it in.

Its possible to save the motor as long as its ONLY the bearings that are wrecked so far. If the rods or crank are damaged you might as well pull the engine and either:

A) put a different engine in
B) source a new crank and rods, install them, and then put the engine back in.

Get an estimate from a shop and bring the bill to Walmart if you think they are at fault?

Try changing the oil back to what it used to be. And in the hot summer months, consider a higher viscosity.

Walmart did a new oil change and put the correct oil in and they said they are not at fault because i have an oil leak which i know of it takes a half quart every 3000 miles. Also have done a motor swap on another vechicle and it wasnt too bad. But if its not the bearings what else could it be. also what i think is bearing noise is coming from the lower end and it gets loud. How do i know if I should put a new crank or rod bearings how do i know if its to far gone

Its the bearings.

Its Walmarts fault, they are just trying to ***** out because the underside of the car is oily. They would have said something if it was puking oil like a freshman college girl pukes booze at 3am. Bring them an engine swap bill and force it up their ass.

You'll only know if its "to far" after you pull the pan. Its a matter of how much rod bearing is left / if the rod and main journals are scored (thumbnail test)

Seriously, get a swap estimate and stay on Walmart. make a scene in the store if you have to, get SOME money out of them. Get a check for a JY engine at least (start high, settle at 1/2 & 1/2)

How is it Wal-Marts fault? Did they not fill it or something? If they used new oil and topped it off (the OP hasn't said it was low) how in the world did THEY cause the failure.

I hate wal-mart, but damn, maybe the motor just shit the bed. Maybe the OP drives the a maniac. Maybe, just maybe, nobody is at fault. But I do realize in this country we feel the need to sue and blame somebody for EVERYTHING.

Unless walmart didnt put enough oil in ... or forgot to put the drain plug in ... etc .... I to dont see where they can be held liable.

Its possible that the bearings where bad and about to "spin" and this last event ... intially no oil pressure for a nano second when the motor was fired up ... was the last straw .... its plausible ....

Ya I can understand that it is very possible. But either way i need to replace the motor but back to my main question can i put a 3.0 in place of a 3.2 up my way it seems to be easyer to come by the 3.0. I am an imature when it comes to pulling a sho engine but I love working on my car and learning more and more about. There are a few motors I've seen up here for 250 to 300 but they have like 160k or more?

Short answer is yes.

Long answer. 3.0 blocks and 3.2 blocks are for all basic purposes the same except the bore. However a 3.0 mated to an atx will be SLOW. You would take the 3.0 block and rotating assembly and swap all the 3.2 stuff on to it. Seems like an awful lot of work to reduce performance. Look for an atx car with a blown trans or that has been rear ended. Buy the whole thing, pull the motor and do a 60k and rod bearings. Drop it in your car and drive happy. Besides that you will have a lot of left overs for spare parts or to sell and recuperate some $.

Why don't you just swap the rod bearings and see if that helps?

If you are going to put another used motor in there, you are going to need to change the bearings on that motor also, anyway.

Just because you got your oil changed at Wal-mart doesn't mean that they had anything to do with it.

Have they been driving your car for the last 18 years as the engine/bearings/gaskets, ect have slowly been wearing out? No. Rod bearings don't go out because of one correct oil change, they go bad over the lifetime of the motor.
