Well, I've made the plunge (pun intended). I'm having a machine shop laser measure and machine upper timing covers for the 3.2 in The Other Woman. Damn these women, you give them one piece of jewelry and they want more...jewelry that is.

The first run has to pay for all the computer and measure work so it's more than I wanted to spend but I should be able to get them down on the price on the second batch. I don't know what Fernando will charge to polish the outside yet either.

Anyway....I'm going to have them engrave "YAMAHA" on the front and I need to give them the font and or design. Anybody have a pic of the word YAMAHA they could send me to forward to the machine shop?

My piece won't be in the production line-up for another week, so I have some time to find something nice.

Thanks

Tom

Sounds like an awesome project!! I can't wait to see pics. I would definately be interested in an upper cover if the price is right.

Here's some pics I found on eBay:

And since it is for the "other woman", this might be appropriate:

Yeah, me too. I've tried sanding and painting and clear coating, and it still doesn't look nice. And the plastic cracks. If I had the money, I'd do all three pieces of the timing cover. At least the top one is the only one that's really visible on the cars.

My next project will be a billet cover for the oil fill cap. I hate that ugly thing and it's made out of plastic too!

Thanks for the yamaha pics also. I don't know if the symbol will fit also but that would be nice.

More nice bLiNg-bLinG for Tom's motor. thumb

I'll be interested in your experiences with the machine shop for my brake project.

Eric,

What are you trying to do? Cut some new brackets? We can do that. I've been looking for an excuse (I mean reason) to buy a plasma cutter.

The brackets are probably the easy part. Since the rotors have an unusual offset I may need custom aluminum hats for two-piece rotors. There are some other options for obtaining these, but I want to explore some full-custom avenues as well.

I know, $$, but whaddaya gonna do?

Besides its always good to know a good, competent machinist.

Tom,

I will be at work sunday night and can email you the Yamaha font in high resolution. I also have it in vector based form and bitmap. Email me your email address.

What would make a nice oil fill cap is if someone would make one of those breather caps I've seen... except have the top (which is usually chromed) engraved with the tuning fork emblem. Maybe even powdercoat the thing to match the SHO intake/valve covers.

A pc'd billet cap with the tuning fork? I think that's a great idea! I wonder how hot the cap would get though.

Instead of going thru the long and pricey process...why not just have the plastic cover chromed....there are some companies that do a great job in chroming plastics.

As far as the billet oil cap goes, just look for one on eBay that's for a Mustang. That's where I found mine and it fits perfect and looks awesome.

Well, I would suppose that the chromed cap would get about as hot as the valve covers do... or maybe not quite as hot depending on the material and its heat transfer coefficient. I wonder where it would be possible to find a place that could take a pattern and engrave it (deeply) into the metal. The tuning fork emblem isn't terribly complicated.

Actually, that mustang oil cap looks about right for what it should look like. Now to figure out about powdercoating/engraving...

Hmm.. this oil cap is kinda spiffy. It would be neat to be able to put the Yamaha emblem like some people have on the outside of the cars inside something like this too...

My idea for the oil fill cap was just a billet cover with the Yamaha symbol (3 crossed tuning forks) engraved on the cover. Being just a cover will allow it to be lined up perfectly when the cap is on tight.

It would be too expensive to have the machine shop do the threads and o-ring groove, at least for 90% of the people on the forum.

Just an idea anyway.

That definitely does sound like an awesome idea. We might want to see if they could make the cover in the SHO color and also in Chrome.

Might also just make it so that it was a metal cap, with an inset for the Yamaha emblems that the Yamaha dealers sell. That would be cool as well.

I haven't done ANY graphic design in the recent past, but I might just have to whip out a program and try it! This is getting to the point where it could feasably happen. :)

Word of Warning: The Yamaha emblems are NOT cheap!

he he. It's pretty trashed right now. That will soon change with an upcoming swap and a chance to scrub the thing out while it's empty. :D
