How do you get the mirrors themselves out of the housing?

I pushed the tall side, the one next to the window in, grabbed behind the pointed/ outside edge and pulled.

Sometimes they break, sometimes they dont.

You could also take the screws out of the bottom and pull the internals out and take the mirror off the right way

I would recommend a heatgun or hair dryer to make the plastic a bit more pliable when taking the mirror off.

Be very carefull with the glass itself, it's VERY sharp if it breaks! I recommend using gloves..
